Ouch I forgot how much it costs to run a car!

    Hey all,

I've driven company cars for the last 4 years and I forgot how expensive it is to get a car on the road!!

So today I've finally gotten my car registered in NSW. This is a bloody tough process when you've bought a car from interstate!

$1,200 at the RTA - Registration, Stamp Duty and Personalised Number Plates
$650 - NRMA Comprehensive car insurance
    $450 - NRMA Green Slip
$95 - Blue Slip (outrageous I needed to get this, the car is almost brand new!)

Coming from driving company cars for years I totally forgot about all these costs, I used to just jump in my car and drive it, blissfully unaware of the costs! I guess the stamp duty and blue slip are one-off costs.

Whats more, after taking the SA number plates off and getting my new personalised ones from the RTA, I've found out that the screw holes don't fit my plates, they're spaced way too far apart. I'm taking the car to Volkswagen at Sutherland today to see if they can help me out here...

Anyway I still love the car to bits I guess we have to cop these costs in our pursuit of love! Lucky I start work at my new job next week, as my money has just about run dry

Shouldn't have to get blue slip unless your car is older then five years. Same with pink. Unless they changed in the last year as I just moved 1.5 years ago from Sydney. Had a 2008 liberty and never did a blue slip when I swapped from Vic 6 months after buying the car brand new. And never did a pink.

The blue slip is a combined identity and RWC (pink slip although it is now ALL online with no paperwork. You do not need a pink slip for the first 5 years of a new car. The identy check is a one-off. I had my Torana for 13 years when it was discovered there as a typo in the chassis number on the RTA system, and I had to go through the whole process to correct an administrative error. The paperwork I had from new was correct, by "fat fingers" at the RTA saw them makean error when entering it and I had to pay for it.

Stamp duty is a rip off.

Yes, it does cost just to have a car in the driveway ready to go on the road.

Now, your personalised numberplates might have an annual cost unless it is a standard format number.

Yeah the numberplates are an annual fee. such a rip off, in QLD you can buy them outright but not here.
And ouch on the RTA typo, that almost happened to me with the NRMA, i made the girl re-read the vin number to me and she had a number wrong!

@lunchboxgti The blue slip is a one-off and it was required by the RTA. Then I don't need anything for another 4 years or so until you need to get the annual pink slip. But the car is a 2012 model so thats a way off yet.

I know it's a one of I had a couple of cars I restored while o lived in sydney and had to do blue slips to get them registered for the first time. But when I moved from Victoria and transferred my daily I didn't have to get one done car was 6 months old at the time and it was. Liverpool RTA they told me just get a green slip and come in to pay rego /hand in plates. Guess I got lucky.
Tas is they same now for initial check when transferring over from another state but mechanics can charge what they want for it. Some charge $180

$180?! Ouch. I thought $95 was steep. I had another mechanic quote $60 for it but I could only get in to see the guy every third Friday after a blue moon between 5:00pm and 5:02pm seemingly. So I went for the easier but more expensive option :p

We had to blue slip our van back in NSW after buying it new out of VIC. As for Pink Slips, it's the first three years (unless things have changed) you don't need to get it inspected, after that it's only about $35.

As for the rest of your costs, consider yourself lucky... that insurance costs is awesome... try putting in your postcode as 2560 and see how that changes :S Stupid SW Sydney.

I had the liberty for 5 year in NSW and never Did a pink so pretty sure it's 5. Before that I had a V8 and even then having the same 2560 post code my green slips where pretty good. Just check my last green $283 and the v8 before that was they must have really gone up recently $359.

The insurance cost is awesome I know. My girlfriend just moved up from Campbelltown (Eschol Park). She was paying more for insurance on her Lancer ES than I am for my Polo GTI!
