    oily smell

Hi all. Took my new (3 days old) polo tsi for a little trip up and down some steep windy roads in the Dandenongs today (couldn't help myself). After I stopped, noticed a smell of maybe it was hot oil (definitely not brakes tho') - sort of greasy and unpleasant. Dissipated after a while. No warning lights or difference in its performance. - Is this "normal", given that it's only new? thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I had the same smell coming from mine when i first got it.....

All it is at the end of the day it is just because all the parts are new,

my car had 7000kms on it when i got it (ex demo), now its got 14000km and it doesn't smell much anymore at all.....

Had that first day, its just wearing in mate i had an ABT rear diffuser and exhaust installed same thing when its new parts its just the burning off of excess glue, oils, grease, lubricants etc etc.

However if it keeps happening raise your concerns with your dealer.

thanks guys. For a while i thought I might have overdone it - some of those hills were damn steep! - gee it handled them well! . Today on the flat, just travel to work and home, no smell. - Will have to try to reproduce the problem next weekend. see what happens... Thanks again.

so should I being doing something different? being more gentle for a while? - I thought they were "run-in" already. should i be worried, or just live with it for a while? like i said, there were no warning lights. .

there is a saying mate, with cars you need to bed her in regardless of the engine being run in.

Giving some stick (not rev bashing) helps seal the block so a good heavy exceleration here and there is actually good for your car mate.

Read this for peace of mind.

Don't worry about it mate, the smells are generally caused (like emntioned previously) from components heat cycling and off-gassing any reminant smells left in them, my car reeked like a bad fart after running in the day I picked it up Just make sure that the "stick" you're giving it only occurs after the engine is up to temp

Thank you guys. - the link you sent Hail22, was written in such a way that even dummies like me can understand. As to the engine being "up to temp", Gavs, I think so, but not having a temp guage on the dash, is annoying. Ahhh... I'll work it out; but do appreciate the advice and reassurance.

There isn't the coolant temp guage at the bottom of the tacho?
