    Oil Light

    Hi there

I have a GTI and wondering about the oil light.

Can you tell me if your oil light comes on when you first turn the ignition on. All my lights come on except the oil symbol.

I dropped into the dealer the other day and they told me depends if it has a sensor in the sump or not.
I was also starting to get "that" squeak and just wanted to document it.
He had a look and it does have a sensor and he then wanted to book the car in to check.

I did this and when I picked it up he said the sensor / light is working as per technical manual - only comes on at low level/pressure.

It doesnt come on at start up.

I am just really surprised at this.

No oil light illuminated at start up on mine, guess it's normal for you If all else fails, like I KEEP saying to people, there is this little book that gets put in a cubby hole in the glove compartment, it's full of wonderful and amazing information

Speaking of which, does anyone know where I can get a hold of an electronic copy of the user manual to give me some light reading before my GTi arrives?

    thanks for your reply

BTW that little book you refer to mentions "some warning lamps light up when the ignition is switched on and should go out once the engine is running"
It doesnt mention which lights and it doesnt show a picture of where they are suppose to be.
I find it strange VW dont light it up as it does on my NB

It would be reassuring to know that the light actually works

but surely its a "low pressure" warning light.... so without the engine running there is no oil pressure hence the light should be on????

I think what bizarre is trying to say is that the light never comes on even before the engine fires up meaning that they have no way of knowing if the light is actually working or not - seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to want to know to me.

    correct ^^^^

All my other cars do it.

There is a slight uneasiness not ever having seen the light work and knowing how these things like a sip of oil

I will adopt the same principle with the Polo (when it arrives) as the Golf GTI.....check the dipstick every 4 weeks or approx1000k, personally prefer to do this anyway, so far the Golf has used 1.2L in just over 5000k, just had it's first service incl. oil change
