    Oil Consumption Test Issues

Just wondering, have any of you guys had issues with the dealers about Oil Consumption Tests being done.
To me it seems the dealers reckon they can just top it up with oil and brush you off.

    Scenario 1.
Went to dealer. Had car serviced 15000km and asked for oil consumption test. Car had oil filler cap, and dipstick secured as to not remove.

Returned car after 1000km and the dealer just topped it up and said keep on doing so.

No paperwork issued or notice on my service invoice.

    Scenario 2.
Had car looked at just under 2 weeks ago at another dealer along with a few other issues.
Car was topped up, paperwork states engine oil test started.
Got home, car oil dipstick and filler cap not secured to prevent tampering.
So i opened it up and had a look and it was filled above the "A" mark on the dipstick as per owners manual.
    So obviosuly its overfilled.

So i guess that seeing VW After sales is ****, what would u guys do.... regarding the engine burning 800 - 900ml of oil per 1000km.

My dealer was quite good, just did it as a test after the breather pipe fix.

There wasn't any need for security devices though, I don't get that unless it's for show or your car is in and around a garage having a million things done and it might get topped up by accident... I mean why would you foul your test up?

When I did check it at the start of the test after my fix, I honestly felt it was over filled though.

I've got a great dealer too! I got a new long block in my car after 8000 kilometers, and there were no problems what so ever. I had a oil consumption test done, no paper work at all, just a new engine in a couple of days. Great!

Unfortunately this sounds the norm with VW dealerships and if the recent issues regarding the recall have showed us all, very few have changed their ways.

If they were doing a consumption test then the procedure is to seal off any exit point for the oil to stop you from not refilling, but removing oil. If they have started the test (which I doubt) then they drain the oil for a specific amount of time and measure the oil. They then refill the oil to full and after 1000kms the do the same again, drain the oil for a specific time. If the level has dropped by more than 1L then the next steps are taken. To answer your question now, yes there are other users that have had ongoing issues with dealerships regarding oil use.

To be perfectly honest it sounds like they have either a) deliberately over-filled the oil level to give a false reading so when they drain 4L out of the sump they can claim that you haven't used enough oil or b) they have just gone ahead and overfilled it thinking you wouldn't check it and as their official 'check' they will just check the dipstick and again say 'it hasn't used enough oil'.

If one thing vw ownership has taught me over the last 10years, it is this. Don't trust a Vw dealership, be customer care or anyone at vw head office. Call me a sceptic but I've never had a single positive dealing with a dealership even if I do have a good one to go to. Irrespective of how great the dealership is, the fact my car has been back for 2 recalls and 8 individual warranty items (9 times in January for another 2 issues) is a negative in my mind.

My dealer is always very specific on the paperwork about the work they do...

I don't have it at hand, but the paperwork said things very much along the lines that gavs wrote:

    "Drained x oil.

Let drain for 5 minutes as per protocol.

Refilled with exactly 3.6L of oil.

Client to return in exactly 1000km."

There was more to it, but I can't remember it all.

    And sealed to prevent tampering.

Getting a new pipe installed today. (Plus clutches. Plus recall mechatronics...)

PS: I noticed a typo in gavs comment - if more than 500ml has been used in 1000 km, it is out of spec. The acceptable spec is 1 L per 2000km...

Yeah I booked in for an Oil Consumption test in September. When I picked it up it turns out they didn't want me back to test the consumption, they just replaced a bunch of hoses and pipes they said were broken and topped up the oil.

IT didn't do a single bit to improve the consumption, if anything it seems marginally worse. I keep having to fill up every 1200-1500km.

As i have said numerous occasions, when you are dealing with service staff like this, don't bother speaking to the service manager, you speak only to the dealer principle and then if it's not resolved yet, you call Volkswagen customer care while you are still in the dealership. Then see them start playing ball. If they still don't, go to another dealership for chrissake!

How much are you topping up every 1200-1500km? How low is the oil on the dipstick when you're topping up?
