Hi Guys,
I have been topping up the oil on the Polo, since getting it I have topped it up with 700ml. It has done around 10,500KM's, is it normal for it to use that much?
Thanks

Just picked up my Polo 77TSI on the weekend. Salesperson said that even though services are 12 monthly, that you need to check oil on at least a six monthly basis and correct oil can be purchased through them. From that I assumed it will use some oil - not sure whether 700ml is more than they expect or not.

Try 4L in the first 15,000km in my 90TSI. Since the service it seems to have settled down and has hardly used anything in the 3k since. It was a bit of a shock to me after having two cars that never used anything in 200k+ and 300k+

You'd be amazed how much of that is going through the engine via the blowby, but still sounds very normal for any new car I've run in.

Most turbo 4cyl motors will use ~1L of oil every 1000km. To only fill up 700mL after 10k is very little usage (although my question for you would be why on earth are you leaving servicing that late?! Every 5,000km for turbo cars is ideal.... but even 7,500km can be stretched if you drive it quite sedately. I certainly wouldn't be leaving them the 15,000km that VW recommend)

Really depends on a number of factors, such as the viscosity of the oil, the type of turbo, how the car is driven, how the manufacturer handles blow-by etc.
I know my old GIAC'd Polo GTI used less then the typical 1L/1000km rate, but other turbo cars I've owned (MY05 WRX WRP10) or friends/family owned turbo cars (XR6T, MKV Golf GTI) all used around that 1L/1000km rate.
The whole 1L/1000km is more a guideline on what you should deem as acceptable oil usage.
Again, these figures only applie for petrol turbo cars.

Well I hadn't really been checking the oil much (Last car was a Subaru, didn't really ever need a drop) and when I did check it the other day is was below minimum.
That is an insane amount of oil to use. My dealer advised me that my first service was due at 15k, I even asked if there was an 8k service and he said no only 15k.
What is a good oil to top it up with? I have been using an oil that I bought from VW, but it was expensive and only 900ML. I need something that will last longer if I will be topping up that frequently.
