Thumbs down Oil change 1500 kms, 2015 81 TSI Auto Comfortline.

Warning light 28 days to go to oil change. Called at the local VW service dept. $400 to change the oil/filter with Castrol Edge Professional ( only comes in 44gallon drums for the dealer to rip you off and keep your car coming in for service )
Castrol Edge Titainium same spec. is 5 liters for $67 at autobarn, filter Z 781 $12.90. Expensive 1 hour job 'eh ? Nowhere in my Owners manual does it mention oil/fluid volumes, ie gear/box, coolant, etc. My old Saab was full of info at the front of the manual. Are these secrets known only to VW ? I will go to an A grade mechanic and see what he will charge Will not void warranty either Where are all these secrets to be found ? Any other info you guys think I should know ?

You can also get Penrite oil from Repco. It's called Penrite Enviro+ 5W30 with VW 504/507 specs. There are other brands of oil that you can buy as well. Just make sure that the oil is approved by VW.

Your 7 speed dsg is filled for life.
Your coolant is G13 and as such is filled for the life of the vehicle, unless it's specific gravity drops below the minimum threshold.
    Any other questions?

When i hear "filled for life" all thats means to me is that its designed to last until your warranty runs out and then it will crap itself. The 7 speed DSG needs all the help it can get to even have a hope of being reliable in the short term, let along in the long term.....do not neglect that DSG box in terms of servicing.

You can only replace the gear oil in the little 7-speed, not the oil for the Mechatronics.

Even then, to do the gear oil you need a filling adaptor.

4 litres and the $67 oil is not the same as ProIII. This is the ONLY Castrol one the same https://www.autobarn.com.au/castrol-...-5l-engine-oil. Pro III also comes in 5 L from VW parts for about $93. Buy the Penrite. I wouldnt have a Z781 on my a=se for a wart. Buy a proper VW one they are only about $25 That service would be 15,000 wouldnt it NOT 1500 and it cost me a bit over $200 with Penrite oil..

Might not void the warranty but may go against you if you want a favour from VW in the future as others have found out.

Yes a Saab would need all that to keep it on the road

Edit As yours is a TSI you could use the A3/B4 oil which is 502/505 grade approved but that is only for petrol engines or non DPF

This one Product Range | Castrol EDGE | Castrol Engine Oils | Car | Products | Home

The page with the two different oil packs was incorrect and following me pointing that out Autobarn have removed it so that when you go to the page you only get the new funny shaped pack which is the 504/507

As above, VW strongly advises against an oil change before 12 months or 15,000kms.

They want the engine to bed in on the original fill.

If you change it before 12m/15K, they may not cover any oil consumption problems.

The dealer hasn't set the oil service reminder properly at the PD. Get them to reset it.

These engines don't need an oil change before 15,000km unless you are driving under "severe service " conditions. It's in your manual.

I'll cut you some slack because you are the same age as my Dad and he has trouble navigating this stuff too. You do come across as a cranky old bugger though

Even a good independent will be around $300 if they do all the stuff on the check sheet. Sure - an oil and filter change will only be 45m labour.

Edge Titanium is 502.00 spec. It's approved and you can use it without issue. It's OK for 15k service intervals but you are better off with the Edge 5w-30 that is 504.00/507.00 spec. It will help with inlet fouling and a few other things. They use it in the UK for the variable service regime of 2yrs/30,000km.

Don't use a Ryco filter. In the past the VW filters have been notorious for bad flow.

Use either Mann or Mahle as they are OEM spec manufacturers. Given the age of your vehicle, I would cover my arse & buy a genuine filter from VW spares - they aren't that expensive. Around $28

Times change. Manufacturers try & make it difficult for people to use an alternative. You probably haven't got a service book either.

If you bought a VW thinking it will be cheap to run & trouble free then you need to adjust your expectations.
