Just ticked over 10,000 and its a 12.5 GTI. The damn gearbox seems to have a mind of its own some days and some days its perfect...

Like gavs said it might be the gearbox thinking too hard and its not actually mechatronics or clutch etc. touch wood! Let us know how your diagnosis goes.

Just putting a feeler out there with GTi guys...

Has anyone ever parked their car for longer than 2 weeks?

I've done this twice now, and both times the car started with a HUGE plume of smoke (wasn't able to determine blue or black from inside), took several more cranks and a stupidly rough idle. The last time this happened, it even stalled and tripped the CEL! I quick turn off and back on solved the issue.

I feel that this might be an indication of the oil issues these motors suffer... thoughts?

The thinking is done by the mechatronics unit mate, I wouldn't be holding my breath on it lasting the nest 3 years!

RE fastlane, not on mine but as you know, mine isn't a 2 stroke version of the twincharger engine....

Yes Gavs that's true the mechatronics is the brain of the gearbox but the engine control unit is the heart so to speak.

If the brake or accelerator pedal plays up and gives the gearbox wrong figures for how much throttle / braking there is well I guess it will show like the problem I have on my car.

I'm still yet to get more evidence of this but my car has NEVER driven as smooth as it did the day I put your accelerator pedal in which says something...

Well, I picked up the Polo GTI on Friday, this time with the steering wheel pointing the right way!

Yeah! I've finally got a working car!

    Not!

Has been towed, now to wait until Monday to find out what else they've f**ked up...

Well, nothing mechanical (is that good?), failed ABS controller board failure...

Finally got the car back this afternoon. (Or evening, considering how long I waited in line with the other suffering customers)

Cylinder 1 has gone FUBAR (ESP, Engine and EPC light illuminated) faults reported as Cylinder 1 misfire and Cylinder 1 disabled and DTC in engine control module.

Had a look and it appears the HT leads have gone on cylinder 1. Coil pack appears to be ok. Swapped the cylinder 1 lead with cylinder 3 and cleared the DTC's. ran it and cylinder 3 misfired and was disabled with the same DTC's so I think it's pretty definitive.

Done 45000km (and the 45000km service on wednesday :s) so I'm not too sure if its a pre mature wear and tear thing or if its actually a problem. Car will be looked at on Monday so hopefully we can get a answer to when it will be fixed...

At least nothing too major - it still got me home

Interesting its not a GTI, its a 1.2tsi. Anyone had problems with the HT leads with these motors.

Just had a chat with a friend in Stutgart, the VW 1.2 TSI should not have a naturally occuring HT lead fry / fault, he eluded that it could be due to poor care from the service department, he asked if you noticed like a plastic / rubber smouldering smell? If so...he says its your mechanic / VW service centers fault and advises you do a full diagnostics including the inspection of each cylinder as there may be some damage.

    Regards.

Na leads are fine physically on the outside - just not getting a spark through by the looks of it. No burning or smell and I would know I'm always looking under the bonnet and checking things so its not neglect.

I want to blame the service department but if no fault was stored (which I know it wasn't because I check with VCDS whenever I do changes) then I guess it's not there fault, they didn't know.

And what do you mean check the seals on the cylinders? The engine is fine (to the best of my knowledge) the cylinder was deactivated after it noticed it knocking so no fuel was been pumped into it.

Was interesting though was just driving normal, started going up a hill and heard a bang (could have been the engine or just a pot hole) and then all the engine lights came on and it limped up the hill like a dog
