If you are trying to pass a truck and spinning wheels in the wet you maybe have a false sense of what good driving entails.

Ok I can see where you misinterpreted what I was saying so let me spell it out for you.

I never said "pass a truck", I said "get in front of a truck". I had someone behind me at a set of lights, truck beside me, I merely tried to accelerate modestly. The TCS light was blinking and the wheels started spinning a bit, so I selected to up shift to reduce torque and try and get more drive. The truck out accelerated me whilst the DSG refused to up shift and I sat there spinning.

What part of that makes me a hoon? Maybe you're too quick to assume ay?
I guess 77TSI's don't have these problems with wheel spin?

Apparently if the wheels are spinning or the TCS is working the DSG doesn't like up shifting so it leaves you over-revving the engine like a twat while trying to get in front of someone.

How do you get an overrevving engine if you are spinning the wheels and/or the TCS has cut in?
I can quite understand why the ecu would be reluctant to make any manual shifts in that scenario as the TCS can cut throttle or apply brakes to individual wheels.

If you don't want to look like a twat then leave the gearbox in D/S

Too many people trying to second guess the DSG when they don't understand the complex algorithms that drive it.

Over revving may have been an exaggeration. It simply keeps revving until you lift off the throttle which stops the wheel spin (and traffic behind you) and let the DSG catch up with your selection.

Pass ? Get in front of Same thing in my book. Normal thing I would do is take foot off and start again and not worry about either car behind or getting "in front" of truck.

I learnt to drive somewhere a lot wetter than here and so dont plant the boot in the wet. Have had the Passat spin the wheels once but prefer to treat my cars more gently.

No, I don't totally understand the complexities of the DSG and what drives it, thanks for helping me somewhat understand.

I drive in Manual mode as I read that as well as driving (in my opinion) nicer and less laggy around town, it also preserves the clutches better than potting around peak hour traffic in D.

I for one don't see you as a hoon, infact I do the same thing, becuase you get stuck behind the truck and then kick yourself for the next 10mins while your doing 10kmh behind it (especially up through the hills)

77tsi's have the same problem but you require a bit more throttle. I usually take off slow then gun it so I don't loose traction.

The only assumption I can say is that this "problem" if you can call it that, probably rests on the fact that if the gearbox see's you are in manual, it is going to think you should drive it like a manual. In this case you would lift off the pedal because once a wheel has lost traction it will not regain it until it slows down. Going to a lower gear ratio (higher speed) would just continue to spin the wheel.

Why didn't it activate the brakes? Good question, it should have...but I don't see it cutting the throttle. That would leave you dead in the water and would be very dangerous for the driver.

I find it offensive when people try to condescend assuming you're a hoon just as soon as you say "Wheel Spin".
I though it was a suitable topic to post in seeing as the car can cut the ignition enough to change gears seamlessly, I didn't think asking it to do the same so I could select 2nd, or even 3rd, whilst to reduce torque but get more drive, out of the realm of possibility..

Others think differently - that's fine.

Out of line there hillbilly. There is a set of traffic lights that are on an uphill stretch of road in boronia (locals will know the ones) on Boronia road. This road is also heavily ridged from vehicles wheels as well as very corrugated. When it rains, there are 4 rivers that run down the hill in the wheel ruts. It takes the patience of a saint to take off at those lights in a ute and I am a fuel-economy striver and even I find myself not wanting to stop at those lights because even with TCS, there is a fair chance that any mildly powerful front wheel drive vehicle will spin the wheels, especially once the stop line is negotiated.

Yokom, I have never heard of it before. I'd go and see if it threw a fault code because with TCS on, the engine shouldn't have free-revved like that unless the tyres were both aqua planning together.

Last week, I had a piece of small grey looking foam come up through the driver side window slot when I was winding it up. Didn't think much of it at the time as the window operated normally up and down, HOWEVER NOW, I've noticed a small amount of grease on the window whenever it's operated. I try to clean it, but then it comes back...looks like another thing to add to the list for the next service
Just as well I didn't have tints on the car.

Had the same as you joe. Ended up winding the window two centimetres from the bottom, inserting a wet wipe with my sons ruler, and winding the rest of the way down. Slid the wet wipe back and forwards, and slowly lifted it out a bit at a time, back and forwards. Did it twice and got rid of the smudging.
