Anyone with GTI's ever randomly put their foot down (WOT) and get no power?

Isn't due to the weather as it has happened in all conditions but those 3 times turning off the car didn't solve it. It'll just have no power then all of a sudden next time I try WOT, it would be back to normal and then next time nothing again?

not sure if this applies to GTI's as much as their turbo is smaller, but hot weather and turbo's dont mix. i know on very hot days, my TT supra can be slower than a corolla

Actually I think KAM has got it. I think the term is called heat soak (I am all for been corrected) but I do notice that when it is a hot day (over 30) and I am driving long enough to warm everything up and then stop, turn the engine off and then come back and turn it on within 5mins - 10mins and drive there is no boost what so ever for about 30 seconds until the water pump starts cooling down the turbo. You can have you foot as far down as you want but it is exactly like a naturally aspirated 1.2L engine pulling a 1.2T car. The result a very VERY slow take off.

The problem is that in hot weather the only thing cooling down the engine is the cooling circuit, not the ambient air so when you stop the engine and thus the flow of cooling, the temperature of that turbo will go from the water temp of 90 upwards to exahust tempretures (450 degrees mabey) before it starts to cool off naturally.

This can result in massive boost losses as the air/fuel mixture has to be massively thinned out to prevent pinging. This could also be the case in peek hour traffic as there is no air flow, though the engines cooling circuit is still one so it should prevent heat soak for the most part.

After you drive with some airflow for 30 seconds or so it picks up boost again and seems to be fine until you stop the car.

I drove my GTI on the 40 day a couple of days ago up and down Arthur's seat, no heat soak issues here. Could be due to the intercooler but seeing as fast lane has had it in different conditions, I'd wager it's something else at fault....

Definitely not heat soak as both times this has happened during 20 and 35 degree days with TC off once noticed. Good reasoning though thanks guys! Jake, exactly like you explained though, it feels like no boost!

Car is getting its 15k service soon (Burwin Commercial) but as it's a Saturday probably won't get to find much. Doubt it logged a code either.

On another note, I get clunking with my DSG with on/off throttle from 1 to 3 gears. Sign of problems ahead?

Car is awesome though, love it and I guess I always expected to have these issues, especially with the DSG

We shouldn't have to expect issues in brand new cars. It's not like the DSG was only just invented!!!!!

I experienced this for the first time last Thursday when it was hot. Drove from Melb CBD to Melton. Exited freeway, approached the roundabout taking foot of the gas, left hand turn and give it the gas again and then nothing for a good 3-4 seconds....then it kicked back in.

Yes. A few times, and only one on a warm day, but not as severe as you with regards to it coming back.
In fact, the times I've had it happen to me I've almost been collected by other cars.

The first 2 times it was sitting still behind a car at lights, and attempting to move into a lane that was moving, so I would have had the steering wheel turned when I attempted to get power. Put my foot down for a burst of speed - not all the way - moved maybe a few inches, then lost power - like I stalled. Took foot of power, put back on, and all was ok.
No Traction contol light, no wheel spin, just no power.

Next time, was turning left out of a driveway of a servo, and needed to beat some oncoming cars - and again, moved a little, but had no power.

Happened again yesterday, but can't be certain if I had any turn on the steering. I might have had a little, but not as much as the first few times. But luckily no oncoming cars this time.

Every time it's just a "one off" that day. Can drive for hours after with no recurring
    issues.
