Thanks for replying Umai Naa!!. It's much appreciated that you can enlighten us because you really are the only one on here that would have any knowledge about this, sales people and dealer managers are sticking their heads in the sand yet it's guys like you on teh tools that actully see, feel and dismantle these things.

So do these electromagnetic clutches have a friction material on them or is it purely metal on metal? If it's just metal on metal, it would explain the "chirp" or squeal on engagement...

4 pumps on the Polo GTI or the 4 pumps covering the 1.4 twincharger in general, ie golf 118TSI ?

Ok, so i just read through how the whole water pump / supercharger clutch mechanism works, indeed there is a plate with friction material on it.
There is a solenoid that, when current is supplied to it, activates the magnetic flux in the system, pulling the clutch against the friction plate. So, could the "squeak" potentially be the actual belt slipping slightly on the drive pulley at the instant that the clutch is engaged, rather than this supposed bearings issue or the clutch slipping against the friction plate.....?

Dav, try and spray some belt dressing perhaps on the pulley for the supercharger, see if this helps??

Hey Gavs and others who are interested,

    Refer: post Mirsad July 12th 2009 @3.39pm
Although there's a heap of posts to read here, one of the dealerships apparently
applied some type of lubricant between the metal plates (not mechanical minded, so guessing they mean the water pump, clutch plate assembly) anyway this temporarily worked, but pretty sure I read another post way further down that VAG said DO NOT DO THIS, as I think it was to do with dust particles etc then sticking to the lubricant causing new problems, sorry to be vague here, but no time ATM to trawl through them all again. This is the link I first heard about this chirp/squeal issue, and the reason we cancelled our Golf TSi 118 order back in Oct '09.

Right now kicking myself for not doing my homework after being led to believe this issue had permanently been rectified, only to read 2 days after placing our own order the post from DAV. My bad! Took 6 mths already to decide due to extra long wait....haha nothin's changed

I am wondering How wide spread this issue is and why no class action has been taken as it looks like VWA had been pulling the old “it's just a characteristic of the car" fav. line......hmm funny how a characteristic develops after 5000+k then.....thought that was more like a warranty job? Now that was back then.....in their defense I would hope two years + down the track they wouldn't keep saying this, seems the only issue is...there STILL seems to be no PERMANENT FIX

This is from the Golf mk 6 section

Take note of AB1 post # 307.......he states his water pump has been replaced “about" 4 times, not Polo GTi obviously, just the same
    engine tuned differently.
I know I read of another person on a different forum saying his water pump had also been replaced 4 times so far, still had the chirp.

I am also reading guys saying after x amount of k's it mysteriously went away, one guy was up around 50000kms.
Wonder if it will again return?

Lubricating the plates is bad because it's like putting oil over a clutch in a manual gearbox, you lose friction and it can cause the clutch to slip and basically destroy the clutch and friction plate.

I think if Dav could put some belt dressing on the pulley and let it get between the belt and pulley system and if still the sound persists, it would confirm that this is indeed an issue with the fricton material on teh clutch plate.

In my opinion, if it were the belt, I believe VW would have released a replacement, of a different compound rubber. Something that offered a bit more traction on the pulley.

Yeah, true. But they also say there is no problem, just like cars are meant to use 1litre of nice, expensive, fully synthetic oil in 1000kms for the life of the vehicle.... and a golf r is detuned for the hot weather in Australia, yet the identical Audi s3 isn't.....

This is why we as owners are sceptical of VGA, because like their sales staff, all they do is lie to our faces. Unfortunately, there is only one of you and that's not enough to cover all the dealership service centres

    Hi all,

I am putting together a list of all the issues I can find that may potentially inflict my car when I get it...might be worthwhile for some of you others as well.

Is the chirp specific to the Twin charged beasties ie does it affect a 77TSI?
Is the high oil use also specific to the higher performance cars?

The only other things I have seen on this thread that may impact me are the fuel pipe knocking, which may or may not have already been fixed at manufacture now,
and loss of power, which also may have been fixed with latest data flash.
Also a couple of minor rattles from loose clips.

Is there anything else that I have missed?

    cheers

From what I know, the chirp only affects the twin charged turbo, don't recall it affecting the Golf TSi 90, only the TSI 118.
    Unsure about the oil usage
