    New GTI Turbo Specs

    Hi all,
currently drive a chipped Mk4 GTI and love it.
Looking at a possible upgrade shortly to the 6R Polo.
Anyone know what turbo they run and if they can cope with a chip CAI,exhaust etc.
From reading i,m happy the DSG is up to task, just don,t want to mod if the turbo runs out of puff like the KO3
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

I just orded a new polo gti. comes in 2 weeks they have a twin charger (supercharger and turbo in one)
APR do a chip, cold air, bigger intercooler and soon to come exhaust.
chip takes it to 149kw at the fywheel and the website says between 9-11kw for the intercooler. intake will add a couple more and the exhaust should be at least 15 or more so all up you would think round about 175kw at the flywheel.
APR havnt seemed to have any problems with the twin chrager that iv heard of buy do a search and you may come up with somthing

Most of the major tuners are able to upgrade the 1.4tsi in the 6R Polo GTI. They certainly are a cool little car to drive.

Having said that, given all of the warranty claims and engine replacements going on at the minute with stock standard cars Im not convinced it is a good platform to begin with if youre looking to tune it.

majority is to do with break in of the engine, all my mates drove them with a degree of gusto and now there about 3000km old they use no oil and run like a dream. others that have drove them like a granny for the first few months are still using oil.
Im sure there are other problems people are having like any other car does but i wouldnt let that turn you off.

We have tuned hundreds of the twin chargers in Australia - I wouldn't be at all concerned about modifying or chipping the vehicle at all.

Afraid of engine breakages? - sorry, that's a load of bull - only people who don't technically understand the workings & calibration of the car would say that.

The Turbocharger is a K03 based unit standard, we already have a K04 + unit on our own test car and have thousands of hard miles on it.

We are approaching over 200kw (crank) out of ours on 98 ron fuel. - It's a rocketship & those that spotted it running at the VW Nationals last weekend - it's lap times speak for themselves

    Guy,
What sort of numbers where you getting from a stock turbo out of interest.

Im sorry this has nothing to do with technical knowledge.
I would suggest if you understand this engine better than VW do you might want to help them out a little. In the stock calibration they are having all sorts of problems and clearly have been incapable of rectifying it to date.

I am merely saying that if someone is looking to purchase a car with the thought to modifying it they would be best to look at a car equipped with a different engine. To me its irresponsible to pursue a tuning program with the possibility of getting in the middle of someones warranty claim.

I agree with Tim wholeheartedly on this but with the thousands of tuned 6R gti's around the world that all seem to have less issues (except 1 I know of) than un-tuned cars, I think tuning is actually a pretty good prospect. I might have even overheard from a little bird, along the grapevine, off a mate in the know, that the stock tune is really rubbish and you're actually going to be better off in the long run with a tune.....

Onthis motor, the only breakages so far I personally know of is one car that destroyed a piston but there is conjecture regarding the legitimacy of the owner's claim. Aside from piston rings not matching cylinders very well on some cars (mine is 23000kms old and I have topped up, i kid you not, 2L of oil) I think these are actually one of the seemingly better built VW motors. Still not any match for the mighty 1.8 boat anchor though but that is just one of those brilliant engines that should be revered.

Yesterday I had an interesting conversation with the mechanic at Euroclass about oil consumption and piston rings.

Long story short...he was speaking of a customer's older model Audi TFSI engine which had major oil consumption issues since the day it was driven out of the showroom. Anyway at the time – I think he said 2002 – VW had run out of the replacement piston rings as they weren't no longer making compatible rings in that specification, Euroclass took an alternate approach to the situation and commissioned a fitter & turner to machine – from a different type of metal – a set of rings to match VW specification.

Once these rings were installed the Audi in question not only racked up another 150,000+ km, but it did it without any evidence of oil consumption. The oil never moved on the dipstick.

Is it at all possible that the current problem with this engine lies in the potential unmatched difference in metal porosity between the bore and that of the factory piston rings?

I welcome any feedback from engineers who can shed any light on this.
