Shame that it takes so little for the insurance companies to write cars off these days. I'd be devastated if that happened to me.

ok, I'm back from my holiday and finished all my home renovations, next on the list is to get the Polo fixed and back on the road or dispose of it if not financially viable. I've had a look through the Repairers & Parts suppliers page but don't want to waste time ringing around places that only deal with air-cooled veedub stuff.

Anyone recommend any wreckers in Melbourne that are easy to deal with that may stock 6R polo parts? Most of the parts I need could be taken from any 6R model, only a few would be Gti specific.
Without stripping back the car I'd like to get some prices for cosmetic external items to gauge if the repair has a chance of being carried within budget. I'm expecting to carry out most of the spanner twirling myself with the help of some friends in the industry at mates rates.

Off the top of my head I know I will need:
Bonnet
Left & right front guards
Rad support
Complete rear hatch
Rear Gti bar
Rear bumper support

I'm sure there's much more stuff underneath the skin at the rear of the car that will been to be replaced/repaired, and probably some brackets & clips at the front. I just need to start putting some prices next to items on a list so I see if the sums add up to repair or sell at salvage auction.

I have a fairly good idea of how much jig&pull (if required), paint, VIV inspection and reg. is going to cost, secondhand parts are the big unknown and is where all the savings will be made or lost.

Have you tried the auctions? Might be able to pick up a cheap write-off, take the bits you need and then sell the rest off....

There is a couple around, there's a white Tsi at Pickles next week, will keep an eye out on how much it goes for. Would still need a headlight, guard, Gti rear bar at a minimum.

Silly question.. Why would you not just get rid of this car if it is a write off? If I had a car with 20000 km that needed a new gear box and engine and was written off I would be as far away as possible. Take the money and buy something better.

Valid question. Still haven't made up my mind either way. Just before the accident the car was running beautifully, 4000km and not a single drop of oil burnt with new CTH engine, DSG behaving like it should. I suppose its a bit of 'Better the devil you know'.
I still like the car, it still ticks the boxes on paper of what I need as a daily, can't think of what I'd replace it with. I test drove the Clio RS when they were first released and wasn't convinced. Was hoping that there would be an update to address some of its shortfalls. If I were to replace it I'd still want 5 door & Auto, non VAG product preferred with a bit of pep and involving to drive.

There were a couple of suitable damaged Polo's that sold at Pickles yesterday, I wasn't able to get the online auction portal working, does anyone know if they divulge the sell prices of different lots after the auction has closed without actually being there?
