MDI - Maximum Size of Flash Disk - What does everyone use?

    Hello everyone,

I have just filled my 64gb USB Flash Disk with MP3 files and it works perfectly, after re-formating in Fat32 file structure.

Initially, the standard Polo GTI Head Unit came up with a MDI Reading Error and would not work, until I used Fat32.

Prior to this I had 32gb disk and that already had the same Fat32 File Structure.

So I found and downloaded a 'HP File Conversion Application' and now the new 64gb works brilliantly.

Unfortunately, it is now full, so I just purchased a USB2 (in a USB3 Case) 128gb Solid State Drive and put the exact same file structure (Fat32) and the same MP3's on it but it isn't working.

All I get is "Media Initialising", for a few minutes when I get bored!

Seems to have power to the case and I presume it is looking at the disc correctly as last time it came up with an error almost straight away.

    Any Ideas??

thanks Greg... mmm... hopefully this will work then... can't see it being any different, current draw is similar.

Just a question... any idea how long it takes to read the file structure when you first plugged it in??

Do you have all the songs in one folder or are they nested in different folders? The CPU in the HU will struggle if you have loads of tracks in the same folder.

Also have you checked if there are any new MDI firmware updates on the mygti website?

That said I'm still struggling to imagine how you have more than 64GB of music that you need to have on one disk (I would just label and swap USB sticks if it came to that, as I'm sure I could split them up by age or genre). To think that once upon a time we could hold around 15-20 songs on a cassette tape or CD

I just noticed that you are using a USB3 case. That may have a bearing to why it doesn't work.

thanks everyone... the case is USB 3 but the drive is USB2... i think. It is an SSD though so perhaps not.

will clear one of my std USB drives

Files are exactly the same as the USB stick too... same structure and size at the moment but I was going to add to it if it worked.

    Grrr that it doesnt..

    Cheers

Also note that there is a maximum of 4096~ files that can be put in one folder. Also using USB3 will not be the problem because of the pin layout (6 small behind the front 4 large) means that its backwards compatible with USB2 connections.

Also might be worth a check to see how much power the SSD is drawing. I'm pretty sure the MDI only puts out 500ma so if its trying to draw more it won't boot up.

thanks Nomadx38.... was told the SSD could be about 1amp but the power light does come up... just no noise! lol

the files structure and numbers of them are all the same as the Memory Stick so that isn't it.

The MDI can even remember the exact file (song) and position from the memory stick after the SSD has been plugged in and tested with no success.

    Cheers
