    Manual Transmission Fluid Change

Hi All, does anyone know the procedure for changing the manual transmission fluid in the little 6-speed boxes hooked up to the 1.2TSI engine?

Sorry to be flippant but how hard can it be? Find the drain plug and then install a 75w-90 GL-4 full synthetic, or if you're really fussy the VW-specified gear oil until it overflows from the filler plug.

Why are you changing the oil?

I was told it wasn't as easy as a fill and drain plug... just wasn't told why/how.

Someone might be confusing it with the DSG. I'm not 100% positive since I don't own one but it should be simple. Stick it up on ramps, pull the plastic underside cover off and have a look for the drain and fill plugs, might use a 17mm hex. Post photos and perhaps we can verify they are correct before you open them. Yeah, at that km you are way overdue.

Mate, it's a VW. Nothing is as simple as it looks.

eg: M6 transmission oil change on my Octavia.
The gearbox is rolled forward on the centreline, so in addition to using the drain plug, you have to remove two other bolts under there to get the last bit of oil out. These hold in part of the selector mechanism, so you have to be very careful that nothing moves during the process.

The fill plug isn't the true fill line (it's low by ~30mm), so you have to either elevate the front of the vehicle significantly or fill through the reverse switch hole. Either way, you have to measure what came out & refill with the same amount (hoping the original fill was accurate) or use the factory fill specification, hoping that you got all the oil out and that the factory spec is correct (not the first time it would have been wrong).

Maybe Polos are straight forward but if you don't ask...

Regarding oil: I'd go with OEM and supply your VIN and the gearbox code. They are very fussy regarding oil and VW have swapped from mineral to synthetic and back to mineral on several models. If you get it wrong, shift quality goes backwards.

Without better information from you I can't determine if it is or isn't serviceable. If it is, the drain plug location is obvious. Why not just contact the dealer and ask them?

Item 5 drain and fill plugs.

Lots of VWs require the engine to be running when the level is checked which means the level drops below the bottom edge of the filler hole. Allowing you to add more oil.

Most are over filled from new.

OEM oil is a safe option as many models don't have an aftermarket recommendation. The 9N3 GTI is one but plenty have survived using alternate replacements, with improved shifting performance.

Only the autos and DSGs need to be running to check the level.

VW were putting the least amount of oil they could get away with in manual transmssions, starting from around 5 years ago. In no way does this affect performance or longevity though.

As per the image, #5 are the drain and fill plugs. Can't say what tool you'll need for them, you'll have to have a look. Will probably be a 14mm or 17mm hex, or even a 16mm tamper-proof multispline/XZN.

To fill, grab some clear plastic hose, stick that in the filler and fill the transmission from up top in the engine bay, via a funnel. It shouldn't take anymore than around 2L.
