With diesels its best if you dont cool it down Get it hot and keep it hot is the thing to do.
Our 77TSI does 5.1 L per 100km on a trip at Speed limit

The buses we drove were turned on at 5 am and apart from lunchtime when they got washed were not turned off till 9pm and were still warm at 5 am when we started again One had done over 800,000km and the engine had never been touched and didnt use oil. A different engine cetainly but the same principles still apply

Ours spent much of its early life travelling 10 mins to work in the morning, then 10 mins back in the arvo with a longer run once or twice a week to relatives or the airport and we did have a few DPF issues but nothing very serious. Still on original DPF at 132,000km.

Is the model diesel Polo affected by the emissions recall?

Yes it is. The 1.6 requires both a software and hardware fix as part of the recall.

If you dont need the diesel then I know of a '12.5 Comfortline DSG in Pepper grey with 14k kms in Sydney possibly coming up for sale soon... My mother in law is considering treating herself to a new car. Drop me a PM if interested.

My 2013 MY13.5 77tsi Comfortline has been flawless for me, just a couple of niggles which were sorted out earlier on under warranty (water pump leakage.. apparently these water pumps were doomed from day 1?)

I get approximately 6lt/100km around town, but 4.8-5.3lt/100km on a trip, on the weekend I went to Canberra and back, used 16.5lt's of 98 petrol.

Won't have any issues with it warming up either, it's at full operating temperature within 10 minutes of starting.

    Mine manual because I was so weary about the DSG, in the 77tsi, they are known for issues like shuddering, premature clutch wear and general confusion.. Two points to ensure a longer clutch and gearbox life;

    - DONT CREEP - either be on the brakes coming to a stop (gears actively changing down)/stationary OR on the accelerator...

    - Get a DSG tune if budget permits. Higher clamping force on the clutches, higher cruising RPM (ie. not going to 7th gear at 70km/h) and better use of first gear... Have heard and read people have a much better DSG experience with the tune.

    Off topic...

Do you reckon they will retrofit AdBlue into the 1.6 or is it just a change to the Cat?

Wont be doing Adblue as no where to put the tank which is usually in the boot plus the lines etc . It seems to be a thing in the airfilter line to break up the air going into the cylinders somehow

Yeah they've confirmed it's a combination of software and an 'airflow optimiser' which sits in front of the air flow sensor to supposedly create a more accurate reading of air flow. Don't see how they can say that the changes will not affect power, driveability or fuel consumption, but I suppose those crazy Germans will work something out.

We just bought a 66TDI DSG7 2011 Polo recently. Low kms,but a little rough in the body and it performs very well as my wife's daily car.

Of the few others we test drove,I would recommend that you look through the service history closely, and make sure it's not excessively noisy (diesel knock & injector noise),and that the DSG is relatively smooth. We knocked back one car at a dealership because it was seriously rattly, quite laggy and didn't shift well in any mode.

I agree with the other comments re DPF maintennance. Longer trips regularly are a must. Unless you plan to buy a darkside downpipe and tune it...

    Regards,

    Justin.
