I am biased but go the manual, it's a really sweet gearbox
Hi Guys!
Not too sure if this is the best place to ask, apologies in advance.
I'm currently looking at getting a 2012 Polo [77TSI comfortline MY12.5] for the missus. We test drove it and she really likes it. However, speaking to a few mates, they informed me about the DSG issues with VWs, which is what brought me here.
I saw the recall included cars before 2011, does that mean the 2012 model cars does not have the issue anymore? Is the DSG issue really a big problem still?
Would love to hear from some current owners.
Thanks all

If you're in need of any 6n1 parts, odds are that I am going to have them (dismantling 2 at the moment)
Apart from a software update, for which there was a voluntary recall, I think all the DSGs are the same. Never had an issue with mine (2010).
There were some mechatronichs failures which from memory were with the GTI 'boxes, which are different, and some problems with chinese-made 'boxes which we don't get here.

If you're looking for a Volkswagen with one of the DSG boxes that had caused a loud mouthed minority of people trouble then my advice for that model Polo would be if it's done around 80,000km+ then it'll more than likely last a lot longer.

A mate of mine has a 2012 77tsi DSG. It's a great car aprt from the dampers (he replaced them very early with Koni Sport dampers).
In almost 3 years of ownership he's had the following repaired under warranty:
•Entire DSG7 gearbox (clutch shudder, weird gear changes)
•Coil pack(s) (poor running, limp home mode, CELs)
•Timing chain & ancillaries (rattle on start up)
•Passenger seat (squeaking)
He said it was a great car when it was running OK but had far too many issues for a new car.
The dealership experience was very poor as well. Initial delivery had broken components such as fuel filler flap, missing luggage cover & vehicle in generally dirty condition.
The same dealer also denied there were any faults when the car was presented to the service department with obvious defects such as CELs. They also accused my mate of changing an engine mount (WTF?). McGrath at Sutherland were totally hopeless.
OTOH, Rockdale VW have been very good and repaired all the faults.
Personally, I wouldn't take the gamble.

The mechatronics unit was replaced even though we hadnt had any trouble with it
Does have minor rattle in back left corner that I cant find
Only done 18,000k since new.

The info I have says that from the manufacturing date of 6 Nov 2012 the DSG was fitted with synthetic oil which was the cause of the most serious recall, affecting 2013-model cars.
The earlier recall was firmware only, if I understand correctly. There is a stamp on the DSG with the build date.
I have a manual one with 45k on the clock for sale for 14k which is slightly negotiable
