Lame Motor BFYB 2013 - No Polo GTI!?

Anyone seen the new Motor Magazine? The 2013 Bang For Your Bucks award is on and it is super lame. There's only 11 cars, and in the mix are a Toyota Corolla, the Mazda 6 Wagon... and no Polo GTI. The excuse they give is that "it would be unfair to the Polo GTI to keep putting it in and in until it eventually loses".

Perhaps they were frightened nothing will be able to beat it for years? They said as much in the 2011 Award.

In case you were wondering, the Mini Cooper JCW won, which is odd as its pretty expensive for what it is.

Seems Motor has jumped the shark.

More likely the one they had died but couldn't risk the bad publicity of a car that has won the last 2 years, that has reaped their praises, drank 3 litres of oil on the drive up there and then fried its gearbox at the 0-100km test

    Now, now Gavs...

Lemonskin, I just read this article too and thought the same thing. I'm pinning it down to a lack of new entrants to qualify for the BFYB title but still seemed a bit strange to include a Corolla and a 6 wagon. I would've thought cars such as the Peugeot 208 Allure Sport, for example, would've been a more relevant choice than a Corolla.

So it didn't get in because it died with a whimper, rather than a bang?

I thought the whole point was to bring back the reigning champ to see if the market had moved in 12 months.. although lol @ above (the joke, not the poor GTI owners stuck with these issues).

Particularly curious considering the Polo GTI has a new engine since BFYB12. Would've been interested to see if they noticed any difference. Is that explanation from MOTOR a direct quote? If so, it's pretty lame. "Eventually" seems to suggest it wouldn't have been this year. If they have a 'two-term President' policy, they should just say that.
