Great post Geoff.
Interesting that you came to a similar conclusion as us, the Imprezza or Polo ?
We looked at plenty (although not anything French)
I am not big fan of low profile tires (various reasons) but was tempted on the sports package if all the glass was tinted, and not just the back.
Enjoy the ride, I do when I am allowed to drive it LOL, and the economy is getting better all the time.
Just read an interesting new owner review on another forum. He said that with tinted rear window he finds the auto dimming mirror almost dangerous at night as when it dims you can't see out the back. Other comments were the rain sensing wipers don't appear too effective, sometimes wiping away for no apparent reason and then not wiping effectively when it rains. Other gripe was the sentre arm rest needs to be lifted to fit your seatbelt.
Other than these things he loves the car and it's handling. Any ideas what the deal is with the auto wipers?

I can't comment on the dimming mirror, as have yet to see it in action.
I can say that the auto wipers DO work well - their sensitivity can be adjusted. Yes, it has happened once that it went off without there being any rain, but it was the first time I used them - I wonder if there is a calibration process that occurs?
I don't know what the poster was talking about regarding needing to raise the centre armrest to fit your seatbelt. I'm on the hefty side and don't need to do this. To manipulate the handbrake, however... you don't need to, but if you don't raise it, you do need to contort yourself a little (over the armrest) to engage/disengage it. A slight annoyance.
What I have found distracting is the chrome surrounds of the vents near the windows. They reflect alot in the windows, just where I would look through to the side mirrors. I often have to look twice in order to: a. actually see what I intend to see in the mirror, and b. reassure myself that my outside mirror has not been whacked out of place (the chrome reflection is angled differently to the outside mirror, so, at a quick glance, it's sometimes disconcerting).
This effect may be worsened in my car due to the dark tinting providing a lot of contrast with the chrome.
I'm sure I will no longer notice it in no time.
Actually i will probably agree abit about the dimming mirror whilst it works great over the last two days ive come to a conclusion im not a fan of the whole rear window design the lines that i think are used to demist the window obscure wayyyy too much of your view and actually distort what you see out the back which at night is even worse, has anyone else realised this i find when i look out the rear window its like im looking at a wavy picture.
The seatbelt and arm chair thing is a bit of boloney it does get in the way of completely pulling the handbrake up but only if you want to jam it fully up
And as for reflections its less the chrome and more the light control panel i find that this is permanently reflected in my side window...
One other thing that happened to me with my car is going over somme rough roads and uneven surfaces caused afair bit of rattle from the back of the car however i dropped the car off at the dealership and they added some insulation inside the boot hatch to add some more structure to it and now its perfect.
Also adjusting the rain sensing wipers on the wiper stalk made mine fully responsive and are now great so no issues there either

I couldn't reconcile this either as I don't recall the issue he reported when I test drove the car.
One other thing he said is he likes to drive with his elbow resting on the door when the window is down, but in his 5 door GTI he finds the B Pillar gets in the way. I couldn't reconcile this either!
