If i drove from sydney to melbourne in a 77TSI would i make it on one tank?

Wear and tear... the more kms you do the sooner it needs a service, tyres were out quicker and so on. Your not just burning fuel when driving a car. We all know they are made to drive long distances but you have to way up all the cost involved. I don't really care what the OP does. Heck, the wife and I Drove Toowoomba to Canberra in a day a few years back in our TDI Jetta. I looked at all the options and it was cheaper to drive then fly cause we were staying for a week and a half.

I have never done it before Karly.....I was going off what the GPS said!....to be honest i think you have all swayed me to bite the bullet and drive down!....sounds like a lot of fun!....I think i am going to go on friday

You say you're not fussed about wear and tear, because the car is meant to take it, etc, etc, but the fact remains that the more kms you put on the car, the more often you will need to replace consumables like brake pads and fluids.

Not to mention the resale value drops considerably. That's called depreciation, and is not negligible.

Add to that that statistically you are much safer flying, and a good case can be made for flying.

Since all you want to do is go and get drunk (short term thinking, risky behavior), I suspect neither of the arguments above will sway you!

Just be sober when you hit the road!

(For the record, I, too, would probably still drive, paying the price for convenience and enjoyment.)

whoa. forgive me for sounding cynical, but notable wear and tear on consumables, as well as a drop in resale value.... after a weekend jaunt to melbourne?

i do the drive up to sydney probably 4-6 times a year. i dont know about my resale value, but no, it's no worse on the car than NOT driving to sydney:

- unless you've got issues, then you wont need to replace/top up any oil after only ~3,000km's of driving (trip there and back, with some around town driving whilst you're there)
- coolant flush/replacement is every 150,000km's
- pads should last at least 20,000km's, not that you're going to be using them on the drive interstate - well, hardly ever.

i LOVE the drive. no, i dont take any of the scenic routes etc, but even just throwing on some music, putting it on cruise control, and cruising up to sydney and back down, is really relaxing, yet also fun - gotta love overtaking people uphill in a tiny hatchback and seeing them looking at you like "wtf???"

just when you do the drive, be wary of dusk/dawn - that's when the kangaroos and wombats like to come out to play.

because of the animals at dusk/dawn, i'd suggest, if it fits in with your schedule, to try out some driving at late night / early morning - i ONLY do my trips at this time of night nowadays - roads are clear of d7ckheads in suvs who dont know the rules, and it's just truck after truck after truck after truck - all of them know what they're doing, all of them are courteous to each other, all of them read from the same book.

it's easy for a little hatchback to slot in amongst them - they dont take any notice, and once you sorta learn their language, it makes for some REALLY relaxed, yet enjoyable driving - slipstreaming them to get fuel economy up, moving from one truck to the next up hills and thanking the previous guy by doing the indicator "thank you" greeting, not having to worry about clueless tourists etc...

i love driving late night/ early morning from melb to sydney - it's a very smooth trip. my record is leaving sydney at 4pm and making it back into melbourne 5 mins before the bottle shop closes at midnight.

That sounds pretty good....with my schedule i was planning on leaving at about 1 pm on the friday...i wanna get down there just in time for the night clubs on chapel street to be pumping haha.....probs leave at about 3pm on sunday.....should be coolio

Ha, ha, Mr Scott! Don't get me wrong! Of course one weekend away will not make a huge difference, but it is never as simple as just calculating how much fuel it will cost.

It is the principle of the thing. The more kms you do in a car, the more the the car will cost you. Up to you to decide if it"s worth it.

Well....I did the drive!...Bloody long time haha....I think I will just be getting on a plane next time but it was fantastic having my car in the city....but saying that i probably could of just rented one!...but no worries!....best thing in my opinion is that i have done it and now know what it is like....the car did a fantastic job!.....I pretty much sat on 113 km/h on cruise control the entire way. I managed to do it in 8 and 1/2 hours.

Only problem that i had is that my speedo is out by about 10 km/h......The car said i was travelling at 121 km/h while really i was only travelling at 113 km/h...In my opinion that is too far out.....does anyone else think the same or should i not care less?..Its annoying having to use my GPS to gauge a correct speed!.....which was accurate too when i went through a speed check gate in Victoria.

good point!....No i didn't...I made it to eulua. or whatever it is called...about 150 km's out of melbourne....i think if i only went 100 km/h i would of made it...but i preferred speed.....average was 5.6 l/100km
