Yeah, stealership are a total rip off for servicing, it's how they make most of their money. Find a good euro specialist mechanic and get it done there, I don't trust any dealership apprentice mechanic touching my cars. I'd do all the work myself if it wasn't for people wanting log book stamps when selling.

Changing the pollen filter literally takes 30 seconds and should just cost the price of the filter.

Where abouts in Sydney are you? There are some excellent independents who will be more experienced, offer better customer service, and as a bonus, be cheaper.

Their pricing structure is 0.3hrs x labour rate to replace the pollen filter. The filter itself is around $40 for the carbon-activated one.

That's for all cars. So on some, they'll make a bit of money out of it, but on others like the 1C/9C Beetle, they won't.

Brake fluid is 0.4hrs for all cars, plus whatever the brake fluid costs. Genuine is about $40 a litre.

For my Golf R, I take that to Exoticars at Parramatta. A massive pain in the ass with me living in St Ives, but they do good work, cheaper than a dealer and are a specialist. The Polo goes to VW at Artarmon.

I tend to find the general servicing mobs, be it ultratune, lube mobile etc are scared to touch euro cars and their "logbook servicing" is an engine oil and filter change.

I've just been quoted $650 by Northshore VW for a major service on the Polo GTi, replacing engine oil & filter, brake fluid, pollen filter and air filter. They are expensive cars to service, and that's life. For reference, Exoticars quoted $100 more but was also changing spark plugs.

Glad I read this thread.. had mine serviced today. Rocked up to the Service Desk and went thru the usual paperwork and the sign here process. Except the price was... $627 straight off the bat!

So when I questioned it I got the mumble mumble mumble blamed it on someone new and price went back to $463

So yeah be careful before you sign your life away

Also in the North Shore but i go to BWA in seven hills. They have heaps of courtesy cars that they provide for no extra which is really helpful since all the good mechanics seem to be out in the middle of nowhere.
