Hydraulic pump - play protection

Hi - I have been to my mechanic who has recorded a fault on my 2013 polo GTI. It reads: hydraulic pump - play protection. Is this likely to be a fault in the main transmission or the mechatronics unit??
Mechanic says transmission, VW parts say its probably mechatronics. Has anyone else had this issue and know for sure?
It drives fine at the moment, but is it likely to develop other problems except for a flashing gear icon on the gear selector on the dash?

I have to take it to VW for diagnostics before they'll give me a straight answer. At $195 per hour of course. After which they'll just tell me it was the same fault code my mechanic recorded I'm sure of it. They did tell me there was no outstanding recalls on the car, so I'll probably have to pay for it. There's a fair bit of difference in price depending on which part is causing the issue, $7300 for a transmission vs $2300 for a mechatronics unit. Can anyone offer any advice? thanks!

Without proper diagnosis this question can't be answered, it certainly won't improve by itself. There are a lot of forces at work in any transmission, continued driving with failing components could potentially lead to catastrophic failure.

Straight answer? How can they give you a diagnosis without inspecting it and scanning it for fault codes?

You need to get it to someone expert in VWs to diagnose this be it a VW dealer or an independent VW specialist. You won't get a definitive answer on the Internet.

thanks for the information. sounds like there's many others with a similar issue. Mine hasn't failed yet, but that thread sounded like its going to drop its transmission anytime. The fault readout looked similar to mine, I didn't get the fault code at the time, just the title and the component but it looked the same. He mentioned his transmission failed in the end too. Mechatronics by the sounds. Mines out of warranty but still under finance with volkswagen. I wonder what my chances of a good will fix are.

You haven't mentioned the mileage on the car but assuming it's not excessively high you may possibly have a chance. VW are actually pretty good with this type of thing but it's not goodwill, it's more to do with statutory warranty, i.e. is it reasonable for such a failure to occur at this stage of a vehicle's life? If this were my car I'd be taking it to the dealer for diagnosis asap and depending on the outcome, asking the dealer to submit a claim to VWA.

thanks george - I'll be sure to ask. Its just hit 100,000 KMs on the clock, so don't know where that fits in their expected failure timeframe for transmissions, but I'll have a go. dropping it in for a diagnostic next week.
