How old was the previous owner? How was the car run in and treated may affect how much of oil it will use. Some use more some less, but for your peace of mind there is no internal combustion engine on this planet that doesn't use any oil, that's just how the things work.

A younger GTI owner maybe a bit impatient and more keen to push that GTI too soon too far, where the older/wiser maybe a bit more patient, following the manufacturer's instructions and ending with the engine that uses significantly less oil.
It's my theory anyway. We don't have a Polo GTI in our family, but we have 7 VAG cars that are almost new and not a single one has excessive oil consumption. From those, 4 cars are driven by drivers around the age of 25.

Just check your engine oil level as some suggested and take it from there. You will find soon enough if your engine is an oil drinker or not.
