How to deactivate daytime running lights?

Just as a note, dealerships have been informed that they are no longer legally able to alter DRL settings as they are programmed to comply to the latest revised ADR.

For my 2 cents, the worst colour is charcoal grey, light greens and darkish blues. These all get lost against the road surface and also against the highway mirage you get in the country, especially under tree cover! Recently I was on the Calder up past Marong there and thought I saw something just as I pulled out to overtake a slow moving car. I hesitated and bloody lucky I did. It was a double tanker with a charcoal painted cabin. This was at about 7-8am so the light was still low and casting long shadows.

This is why cars now have drl's because contrary to American surveys (because the fat f**ks can't physically turn their heads, or see over the bonnet of their f550's) they make cars more visible. If that truck had any semblance of light emitting from the front of it, I wouldn't have been painting faces in my jocks.

I've been spoilt by 7 years of auto-lights on the MkV, but there's always a case when you want to manually turn the lights off (working on the car with the key in ignition, manually turn off headlights & interior lights to save battery drain)

That said, totally agree with DRL's as an always-on feature, which is great in a car with proper LED DRL's - just a pity they're using the main halogen lights in the Polo & not the parker lights instead (or some retrofitted LED DRL's in the bumper).

I agree that having the tail lights on permanently isn't ideal, but don't see a major issue with it - but there's no point in having the license plate lamp on the whole time.

Anyone care to summarise the 6 pages of arguments & let me know the codes to turn the rear license plate lights on or off? and if it's possible to move the DRL function to the parkers (for headlight 'off' position).
Changing it from main to Parker's is pointless. You might as well have nothing on as you can hardly see the Parker's on a polo as there coming towards you. If you want them off while working then turn the switch once to the right for Parker's as it will draw less power.
And turn of the interiors at the switch.

I tend to agree with DRLs. I have my fogs VCDS'ed to 50% on my MK5 R32. Driving on country roads with normal low beam can be very dangerous as animals see the lights and assume that it is the sun and they can fly/hop/run to the light as there is nothing there. They are not trained to realise that cars move whereas the sun doesn't. I did a long experiment in a work car one day. There were lots of grass parrots in the outback roads we were driving on and whenever the lights were on, we got lots of strikes. with the lights off, no hits. Kangaroos hit real hard. So if you are driving on non-suburban roads, use parkers or drls but nothing brighter.
My drl fogs turn off when the normal lights turn on with low light levels. Before someone says MK5 R32s didn't have fogs, Mine does in the same spot as a GTi with R32 grills from Germany There are pics in my photobucket account in my signature below

A heads up to the guys with Polos with daytime headlights and parkers activated at the same time. I've had a look around and this varies from car to car.

The MY13.5 Polo I have came like that when purchased and at the 1 year / 15K service I questioned this as the Owner's manual (27.08.2012) pages 98, 100 states that only the daytime headlights and number plate lights should be operating at the 0 position. That's why the dash lights switch off in darkness and dull conditions to prompt the driver to turn on the lights / parkers so the tail lights are turned on. They recoded the system to have the parkers turned off at the 0 position but they still operate on the other positions. They did look at turning off the number plate lights but it's not possible after checking with VGA.

This helps to ensure the wattage is not greater than 25W as shown in ADR 76/00.
