How to deactivate daytime running lights?

I was told that LED DRL have to be dimmed on the parking/low beam setting because when they are used in conjunction with the low beam the light output exceeds ECE standards.

Me personally I have them on full all the time 'cos they look cool.
And ADR and DOT and JASO. In fact, depending on the proximity to the indicators, they are mean to dim by law when the indicators are turned on.

Haha Gavs you forgot the SAE!

Actually America is pretty different when it comes to "some" car standards, not sure if lights are one of them.

I do know they have different standards regarding indicator position and side lights. Also total surface area of glass and traditional lens headlights

I didn't leave the other standards out because they don't apply, just couldn't be bothered typing them XD

Couldn't you do this with a VAG Com cable and some VCDS coding?

Edit - just read thread in detail.. please ignore..

I still dont understand why you'd WANT to deactivate the DRL's. Unless you hate safety?

why did vw setup the headlights like this on the polo anyway ?

the 'off' position, when driving, turns the headlights on, which is silly, so i always turn it to the middle position to turn the headlights off when driving, and then when parked, put it back to the left position to turn them off.

Hope you realise that when it is set to 0 the low beam is running at reduced voltage to act as the "Daytime Running Lights". They are not as bright as when set to the low beam switch...

The point of daytime running lights is to have a set of lights on during the day so the car can be seen easier. It is a safety feature and a bloody good one. Since changing to my Xenons (with LED DRL) I have noticed a definite change in other drivers behaviour. Instead of pulling out with little gap (almost as if they didn't see me) they don't now and will wait until I pass, or take off quicker.

I think he's referring to the halogen DRLs which just use the main headlights at dim

How to deactivate daytime running lights?

I had to drive up and back to yarrawonga yesterday and on the benalla road I finally realised why there is such a push for DRL's to become mandatory and for there to be no option to be turned off. I was sitting behind a slow driver, awaiting my time to pull out when in the distance I thought I saw a glint coming the other way. Unsure of what I saw (thank god I'd had a good sleep for a change) I hesitated overtaking. Good thing I did because it was a charcoal coloured hilux coming the other way! Now, if that car had even just it's parkers in it would have stood out more from the shadowed road surface so for me, I will refuse to code anyone's car with VCDS who wants drl's disabled. 2 hours less sleep and I might not have made the same judgement on that glint of light and I could have very well killed myself, my partner, her sister, mother and niece.

In fact I think now it is actually illegal for a dealership to even do it. They are there for a reason.

^ Exactly what Gavs said, they are there for a reason and shouldn't be deactivated. A very good safety feature indeed especially at that time of the morning / afternoon when people think its acceptable not to even turn their parking lights on even though they cannot read the damn dashboard!
