Hill start assist question on 77TSI

    hi all

    got my14 77tsi manual about a week ago...never driven a manual with hill-hold..

however as i experienced this couple days...it seem didnt work in all situations..the car would sometimes roll back immediately after brake was released...my method was fully depressed cluth and brake, got in 1st gear, then let go the brake...

just wondering...does it hv to be certain degrees? (coz i read on website says greater than 5% but not in the car manual) or I did it in a wrong way? anything I should worry about? (coz the car manual says engine fault can cause hill-hold deactived)

    cheers!!

Could you explain the conditions when it didn't function? How steep was the hill?

In my Polo it will stop rollback on most hills, however sometimes the hill is not steep enough for it to activate and it will roll back.

the same incline (couldnt tell exactly but i would say not very steep) that my wife's auto (which with hill-hold as well) would not roll back but mine would..

The hill hold does sometimes fail to engage on hills, and in some cases will engage on the flat. Some times the sensors fail to pick up the gradient properly. Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure the car has to be in gear for it to work (as in neutral you want it to roll, this is how're DSG works anyway).

Also auto hold is a different system altogether. With auto hold until the accelerator is pressed it doesn't disengage the brakes. With normal hill assist it is deactivated after 3-5 seconds or immediately when the accelerator is touched, so it might be best to bring the clutch up to the biting point before touching the go pedal

In manual Polo's hill hold is active even in neutral, it will roll forward down a hill, but not backwards down one.

And in Mk7 Golf manuals it is active in all gears and neutral and holds it uphill and downhill. So be aware when shifting to different models.

    Thanks for those inputs guys!!

I hv tested it on some relatively steep hills...it worked every time...so im convinced that the hill-assist needs certain angel to be activated as VW website would suggest...

Mine doesnt take much of a slope at all to latch on. I find the hill assist a bit of a waste of time. Its a pain when parking/exiting a tight space where normally you would just let the road camber/gravity do its thing doing the zig zag but you have to wait a few seconds for the brake to let go. Then on the really steep hills like my driveway it doesnt really give me that much of an assist and I still use the handbrake. If its only good for me 50% of the time I'd rather turn it off. Same as the 3 flash lane change indicator... errr only I never find that useful.

If you're in reverse it wont roll forward down a hill.

I understand that – I was pointing out that it is 'even active in neutral.'
I've backed a trailer up a hill in our polo, I am well aware of how the system works.
