The same issues would apply to the A1. The 118 Golf doesn't seem to suffer from this but has it's own potential issues.
basically a mate of mine is thinking of trading in his Nissan Patrol and getting either a Polo, a Golf or an Audi A1.
He test drove a 2010 Polo GTI at Barloworld (Botany NSW) that has about 5,000k's on the clock and is roughly $29,000 and really liked it. I wasn't with him when he test drove it, but he and his old man both really liked it.
But he's having some concerns about potential stuff that could go wrong with that engine (off the top of my head, is it the 118 TSI ?)
anyway, has anyone driven the Polo from that Barloworld dealer ?
and, has anyone has serious mechanical issues with their 2010+ Polo GTI ?
cheers

I think I know the car you're referring to. If it's the same one, $29k is - in my opinion - too much for that car. Remembering it's 2nd hand and is around 2 years old by now. I don't think it has any options. The on road coast of a brand new 3 door with no options is currently approx $32k. The new cars have a higher spec level as standard. He'll lose a lot of value very quickly. Also if it's the car I'm thinking of (white 3 door with WSC 57 U number plate) it was used as a VGA promotional vehicle for photography, so I'd be cautious about it having been used as a press vehicle. The dealership has been advertising it on and off for a while now.

Can't help much about mechanical issue, but in terms of the price and service, I rate Baroloworld Botany 5/5.
I put a deposit with them for my Tiguan today, the sales rep, Rabih, was pretty patient and willing to listen.
FYI I slashed about 10% off the price of my order with options, hope this info can help.
Is it candy-white, with the stock options (non-automatic climate control, RCD 310 CD player?)
They've had that for weeks. Part of the problem is you can go out and pay $2-3k more for the same care brand new, with the MY12.5 revisions (bluetooth, auto-climate control, RCD510 CD player)
I can speak from experience because I test drove that "ex VW Headquarters" car. Liked it enough to spend the extra few thousand on a new-new.
Agree with other comments made. For a little bit more you can get a new car with full warranty.
I just bought a new Golf Bluemotion. There were a few demos for sale at $25,888 driveaway. I ended up buying a brand new one for $27,000 driveaway.
Gotta remember, demo cars are generally not driven gently, nor do the engines get to full temperature by the end of the test ride.
