[QUOTE=gavs;651359]Interesting how people compare the GTI to the A1, this is the last paragraph from a recent article in the April issue of Motor Magazine "For less than what you'd pay for either a base Mini Cooper or an Audi A1 Attraction, you could have a Volkswagen Polo GTI. Even the five-door costs just $28,990, but the three-door is a bargain at $27,790. And for that, you get a Cooper S-rivalling 132kW and Golf GTI-matching performance.
VW claims it's baby GTI will hit 100km/h in 6.9sec, which is much, much faster than what this test's Mini or A1 could manage. Where the Cooper and A1 are crying out for more engine, the Polo's twin-charged donk and grippy chassis are a great match. It's engine is smoother and rortier the the A1's, and charges up to 7000rpm.
Dynamically, the GTI seems to have a little more understeer on corner entry, but it actually rides better, with less verticle pitch.
Inside is where the VW's lesser, more generic, rank is exposed, but it's packaged better and will easily swallow four in comfort.
So, for us, go a Polo GTI instead.

The 3dr Polo GTI at $38k drive away is over priced IMHO.

    Hi TCO,

Thanks for your informed statements. I suspect you may have been in a hurry when you posted.

    I look forward to your elaboration of your comments;

"My point is that you are paying the price of Bananas for the apple !"

You say you're making a point, but I don't quite understand the point you're trying to make. Sorry if I'm a bit thick, but I need some more explanation to support your metaphor.

I'm not comparing the cars, but what you can get when you jump up another price bracket.

Again, I really don't understand what you are saying here. Please elaborate.

"The 3dr Polo GTI at $38k drive away does not constitute value for money IMHO"

I understand what you're stating here, but don't understand your point of reference. What did you consider as "value for money" in making this statement, and upon what did you base your comparison? Take a look at my earlier post where I referenced the MINI I currently drive and decision to purchase a Polo GTI.

I look forward to your clarification, as it appears you're someone who has spent a lot of time thinking about your comments.

Well, you are comparing when you mention price, which BTW, at 38k driveaway is a rip-off. As Frostee says, explain or clarify your views, it's only fair

When others on this forum have purchased the 5 door GTI at $35.5k DA (no sun roof) but same other options, then $38k (after factoring in 3 dr and 5 dr retail prices and sunroof) is $2k extra for this 3dr - This is what I mean about value for money.

As for the other comments - I will retract because I had not factored in all the options which has substantially increased the DA price.

As my Sensei has said (which probably bares no comparison to this) trust your gut.

If it doesn't really feel right, then don't do it. It will make you feel not right for the whole time you own the car!!!

Really? I probably shouldn't be surprised that the brochure on the website isn't up to date, then.
