XR5 focus' are on runout for $29,990... Polo is a nice car but $38k is extracting the urine.

There is 1 Golf GTI on carsales that comes close, at almost a grand more ($38990), for a 3 door, and before government stamp duty, registration, etc. etc. Surely you're looking at at least 5 grand more driveaway for a base Golf GTI. Cars are expensive here in Aus.

There is a thread in the Golf VI forum about what people pay for the Golf GTIs. From what I read you can get them with a discount equivalent to all the on road costs.

So a base spec 3 door GTI should set you back around 40K or a bit less. If you can find one.

Remember the Golf GTI spec level is equivalent to the Polo GTI with audio and comfort pack.

The other option is a Golf 118TSI with Sports pack. Then give it a APR/GIAC reflash for 150kw/300Nm

Hmmm, I wonder if you should believe that dealer regardless, what's the chances he can see that there is that exact car on the boat, which is Frostee's car....

No Bi-Xenon with LED DRLs - not even an option - on Golf GTI!

I know what you're thinking, and you're right... "Whatever..."

My circumstances have changed since January and I now need a car quite urgently (as I presently have no car). My dealer won't give me any dates citing the same old 'we have no idea' quote.

So I rang around a few other dealers today and one has a similarly specced GTI coming in June (on the boat right now). In addition to sunroof/audio, it has Xenons/Comfort (neither of which I really care for). Problem is, the dealer knows the popularity of the car and is quoting $37.9k drive away. From my calculations using the price sheet, it's about $1k above retail! The only bonus is I get it in June, which I can't sneeze at, considering the car I have on order has no ETA whatsoever (my dealer, nor head office will tell me if it'll arrive this year!). But paying $38k for a specced up 3dr GTI just seems ridiculous to me, considering what else is on the market (you can get second hand Golf GTI's near that). But the idea of having a Polo GTI so soon is definitely attractive.

I'm trying to negotiate with the dealer but not sure how to approach it. If he can't get within $35.5k I'm thinking of passing and getting something cheaper in the interim of my original ordered car arriving, whenever that is. Does it make any sense to spend that much on a Polo GTI when near-new Golf GTIs are within the same price range? I just want the best bang for my buck, but I need it ASAP. Thoughts?
You can get a demo Audi A1 for 40k drive away.

Not quite the power of a Polo GTi, but real nice and manufacted in Germany.

Interesting how people compare the GTI to the A1, this is the last paragraph from a recent article in the April issue of Motor Magazine "For less than what you'd pay for either a base Mini Cooper or an Audi A1 Attraction, you could have a Volkswagen Polo GTI. Even the five-door costs just $28,990, but the three-door is a bargain at $27,790. And for that, you get a Cooper S-rivalling 132kW and Golf GTI-matching performance.
VW claims it's baby GTI will hit 100km/h in 6.9sec, which is much, much faster than what this test's Mini or A1 could manage. Where the Cooper and A1 are crying out for more engine, the Polo's twin-charged donk and grippy chassis are a great match. It's engine is smoother and rortier the the A1's, and charges up to 7000rpm.
Dynamically, the GTI seems to have a little more understeer on corner entry, but it actually rides better, with less verticle pitch.
Inside is where the VW's lesser, more generic, rank is exposed, but it's packaged better and will easily swallow four in comfort.
So, for us, go a Polo GTI instead.

My point, it's like comparing apples with oranges, or plums even. Sure, they all grow on trees, but that's about where the similarities end. If you want a "hot" hatch at that price, stick with the polo GTI. If you just want a small car, get the mini

I'm actually going into a Polo GTI after having owned a Cooper S Cabrio for 6 years. I love the MINI, it never missed a beat and will be a good buy for someone when I sell it in the next few weeks. I only drive my car to and from work and a bit of drivingon weekends and only clock up about 10,000km per year. To replace the MINI with a spac I would want, I would be spending high $50'sK and I just couldn't justify the money. As far as I'm concerned the Polo GTI is an absolute bargain as everything I compare it to that I would want is at least $15K more.

At the end of the day it's a personal choice- nobody is right or wrong.
