Surely it should accelerate just as hard in D as in S from a standing start.

In "D" mode the DSG changes earlier than in "S" mode. Aside from that "S" mode is really only handy if you want to stay within your power band rpm. Only time I have used "S" mode (with launch control) was against a clubby R8......& wasn't he surprised!!!

Also, put the shifter from D into S and your idle speed increases (like it does in Manual mode). Seems more ready to "pounce", than in D.

In S the gearbox is waiting in gear, in D it's sitting in neutral, hence the hesitation. It's more noticeable on hills after the hill hold Releases itself.

That doesn't sound right (have never heard of the car sitting in nuetral, but rather the clutch is engaged - even the next gear is preselected with the clutch engaged). Just in S it's prepared to dump the clutch for a quick start and shift at the optimum revs, whereas in D it's moreorless in comfort/eco mode and has to interpret your throttle inputs instead of assuming you want to go as fast as possible.

Holden/Opel vectra was the first car I actually experienced doing it back in 2001, many cars now do it as part of the fuel saving technologies. Now though, it's gone even further with stop-start technology.

Oh yes, now I know what you're referring to. I guess clutch in for a DSG is equivalent to neutral on an auto. Having clutches it's hard to believe both K1 and K2 would be in neutral (if it exists)
