From a fuel consumption point of view at least there is no difference 98 or 95. I ran 98 exclusively for 18 months and have now used 95 exclusively for the last 6 months and recorded every fill on Fuelly. If anything my consumption has gone down very slightly using the 95 by 0.1 or 0.2 so nothing to gain consumptionwise by using 98.

Best I have done was 5.5l/100klms (2012 GTI) on a trip from Gladstone to Brisbane. Coolish winter day so no aircon or headlights & caning it regularly while overtaking. That was worked out manually by klms travelled & how much it took when I refuelled.

I do the same trip regularly & that's the best I've managed, even travelling at night with cooler air etc...

Ditto. I did 405kms on freeway with 110kph on cruise as well as caning it on few overtakes. I used 22.5l i.e. 5.5l/100kms

In my commute between Newport (home) and Balmain (work) generally (but not always) out of peak hour but urban driving i get an average over the last 7 months of ownership of 4.5 l/100km from my 2014 66TDI DSG. On a trip to Newcastle I'll get around 3.9. Wonder how the new 3 cylinder TDI would have gone, damn you VW Oz for not bringing it over!

Definitely feel there's a different with the 98.
Not sure if it was just a one off but my partner filled with 95 (freaked out after she realised) and definitely saw that we got about 150km less out of the full tank.
This was at Caltex. Not the watered down stuff from BP.

you cant use a single tank as an indicator unless you drain the tank and find out exactly what is left in there. I reckon you need at least 4 to get a guide. I have tracked every single tank put in my car over 45,000km since new. I am the only person who drives it and fills it so no variables there. Even then you can see I have a couple of spikes where it looks like I've had some shocking tanks. But each one of those is followed up by a unbelievably good one. I used exclusively 98 until 22/4/14. You can see the average hasnt changed since then when switching to 95. The dip in August this year doesnt count because that was about 1500kms of long distance touring for VW Spectacular at Valla.Fuel Consumption - Post Your Figures-fuelly-jpg
