First little hiccup with my new polo...need help RE MDI

Picked up today, 2012 polo 66tdi. It has the RCD510 installed, and the MDI.
As it is the 2012 model, it came standard with the MDI, but the RCD510 was fitted at the dealer.
(apparently the 2012 model that came standard with the mdi and bluetooth doesnt have the option of the rcd510 radio, but the dealer had one spare and installed it)

When i plug my iphone or ipod in, it picks it up, says 'initialising' then says 'Dev. w/out function' and of course nothing plays. The cable i am using is the one i got with my iphone4 in december so i dont think its the cable, and i tried another one aswell. Waiting on the dealer to get back to me.

    Any clues????

Is it to do with the way they wired up the rcd510?

ALSO....as mentioned the rcd510 is linked to the dashboard bluetooth (that horrible standard one). Obviously becuase i can control the phone through the radio. BUT the music streaming wont work? Ive selected to option to allow it, but it wont stream. Is this to do with wiring? Or some incompatibility?

    Thanks Heaps

You can't use the VW Usb cable with the iPhone USB cable, you'll need a special VW iPhone/iPod MDI Cable.

Like this VW RCD510 RCD310 RNS510 MEDIA-IN MDI IPOD IPHONE CABLE | eBay

As for the Bluetooth, i dont know the touch screen BT unit well enough to comment on its abilities. But I believe the 2nd under seat BT unit isn't in the normal polo's, just the GTI

do the cables look the same?

i've got one which looks like hte one in hte ebay ad, but my ipod won't work...assuming i've got the wrong one.

if it's not for an ipod what is it for?

If it plugs into the iPod properly on one end and plugs into the MDI on the other, then I guess it should work. Perhaps the cable is damaged?

i can't remember exactly what it says on the screen but it's something along the lines of "media not recognised"

The iPod MDI cable has the big iPod connector on one end that will connect direct to the iPod itself. I originally tried connecting the male USB of the standard iPod USB cable to the female USB connector of the MDI - if that makes sense. It seems to talk but you'll get "media not recognised" and it won't work.
Right about this time the nice VW salesman came along and offered to sell me the correct cable for $90.

Sure you can, you just need an MDI unit. I'm not sure of the exact part that would fit in the factory location or how to put it there, but this looks like a winner parts wise.
