    Extended Warranty Thoughts?

    Howdy

Has anyone gotten an extended warranty on their Polo (preferably Polo GTI)?

I'm in two minds at the moment. I've had a few major issues with mine and weighing up whether to cut my losses and sell or do I hang on to it for the long run. I'm worried that the thing is going to cost me a fortune after the warranty expires.

That said, I'm prepaired to have the fight with VW to supply one FOC - probably won't happen but I've been burnt a few too many times now to have a brand new car sitting on a scrap heap after 3 years.........

    Hey prcurrie,

I've got extended factory warranty, 3 years so 6 in total. I too am worried about the reliability hence why I got it. I think it was around the 2,200 dollar mark.

If you love the car and intend to drive it for years to come I'd say take out the warranty, if you can't imagine that then sell up!

I got the Allianz warranty. But my advice to everyone is to read the info and ask questions. Having read issues about blow-by and high oil usage, my concerns were around that, and the cat converter - I made sure I got a warranty that specifically covered those components - as not all weill, ans some extended warranties have maximum claim periods.
My advice is not to wait until you're signing the paperwork and have a big shiny waiting for you.

ill0gitech I strongly advise you and everyone else considering an extended warranty, ring Vw, not the dealership, head office in Sydney. Make sure that what you have for or what you are looking at is the approved factory warranty, otherwise you have paid for squat.
Dealership offered warranties have that many escape clauses and paths it is quite ridiculous. You also have something called the ACL or Australian Consumer Law that protects you agains defects for a reasonable amount of time like an engine blowing up the day after the warranty runs out.

The benefits outweigh the $1800-$2000 price tag. One or two issues/repairs and the costs are covered. Selling the car will be much easier if it is still in warranty(especially with the polo having so many issues). Peace of mind makes driving more pleasurable. I think I paid $1800 for my 2 year warranty extension.

From what I am reading now, the booklet "Volkswagen New Vehicle Extended Warranty Insurance" says that Allianz is the insurer, is this different to the other VW one you are talking about gavs?

From my experience with Honda and extended warranty, one issue (blown rear tail light) and the costs were covered.

Unfortunately, that is NOT a VW manufacturers warranty. The give away is the word "insurance". You will NEVER see a manufacturers warranty refer to it as "insurance". For it to be the manufacturers warranty extended to 6 years, there would be a statement on the original manufacturers warranty (not the insurance) that says that VW warrants this vehicle for a period of 6 years from the date of purchase. It would also be titled something like "Volkswagen New Vehicle Warranty" (note there is no mention of insurance in the title), and t would state that the period of the warranty is 6 years from the date of purchase.

What you have is a warranty insurance policy that is underwritten by Allianz, and the terms of that policy are covered in great detail in the PDS from Allianz. VW (more correctly the dealers) are acting as agents for Allianz. This is no different to finance that a dealer or manufacturer organises. You simply sign a finance agreement with a finance company where the dealer acts as the finance company's agent.

Now my brother recently purchased a Subaru Forester, and it does have a genuine manufacturers extended warranty. The warranty document states the period of the warranty is 6 years. The ones being offered by VW dealers are not.

Damn it! So how do I go about getting a VW 6 year warranty? Hopefully the 'insurance' can be refunded.

I agree everyone should research before they buy, and hopefully that was the point we all convey.
I got my information from my father, who works in warranty for a living, and helped me ensure my decision was right for me I'm happy with my purchase. That said, there are going to be pros and cons.

To the best of my knowledge, Volkswagen don't offer an extended factory warranty in Australia:

As such, the new vehicle extended warranty offered by the VW dealer network is underwritten by Allianz Australia Insurance Limited, AFAIK.
