Exhaust Soot on Polo GTI

How to differentiate whether its soot or just dust/dirt? The back of my polo is pretty filthy but it seems to be more brown than black...

If the dirty comes from the silencer the left side of the car will be more dirty than the right one...
If the dirty is uniform it's ok...

I noticed this soot effect(black spots/mist that doesn't come off with pressure spray) on the back of my Polo GTi when I cleaned it yesterday. First time I have seen it on the car, so hopefully it was a one off. Lets see if it comes back in the coming weeks.

So, my car was cleaned yesterday, and I gave the Polo a hard time on the way home, and it was covered in soot.

Has anyone found the root cause? I see the only person who got rid of it, got an engine replacement!

I only started noticing this when I changed servos (my local BP closed)... I will try another BP around me and see if it continues.

Yup mine has not reappeared since engine replacement and this is despite still filling up at the same servos. I'm sure there must be a simpler fix to the problem, complain to the dealer its not normal!!

Just a tip for people getting the soot on the rear of their polo.
After detailing my Polo doing a Wash > Clay > Wax, the soot comes off much easier, and does not stick as much as it used to.
Although this doesn't fix the problem, it does help the cleaning process.

One other thing, I have changed the BP servo I was using, and it seems to be reducing the amount of soot... It has only been one week, so lets see how it goes.

yes, same issue. had this car for 4 years now and nothing has changed. I still use about 4-6L of oil per year (on top of the top ups when its serviced). and yes, our white hatch (and window) are usually covered in oil spots and yes it also blows smoke occasionally under heavy acceleration. sad becuase this is an otherwise great car. hopefully these design faults have since been sorted out.
