Exhaust Soot on Polo GTI

So I just thought my car was covered in dirt, but it turns out the back (literally most of the hatch) was completely covered in black exhaust soot.

The exhaust pipes are covered (I expect that) but don't think I should be seeing a ton of it on the back!

Used a little bit of oil (about 1/4 down on the dip stick) and done 1,400kms!

Thoughts??????

White car + soot = big loss.

For the exhaust use Car Care Products / Speciality Brands / Exterior / Metal & Chrome Polish / Purple Metal Polish

Big yes.. mine was covered in it and blowing plumes of smoke... now had the piston rings replaced and fingers crossed it seems to be settling down.

Haven't seen any smoke as yet but it's only just started doing it.....!

Hey pete, that's not normal. Mine doesn't do that. Black soot is the result of over-fuelling, not oil. Oil leaves a scummy, grey residue.

Having the same soot problem with mine. 5500kms and around 2L oil.........

Have spoken to one deal who says it's 'quite normal' but would have to see the car to see how much soot is on the back.

Waiting for another to get back to me.

Definitely going to challenge both responses!

Pretty much got this response from two dealers.....

I would not be concerned by the soot built up on the rear of the vehicle. This can be a result of different fuel qualities and different additives used in the make up of the fuel be different fuel companies.

The engine management system on your vehicle is constantly monitoring itself to ensure it is always operating within EURO 5 emission standards. Should the engine be operating outside of its emission specifications it would illuminate the emission warning light on the dash cluster.

As i have said to prcurrie, I run only 1 type of fuel in the car and I have no soot related issues whatsoever on my white GTI.

If those of you are constantly just filling up at whichever servo is closest etc, try for a period of time to just fill up at the one servo and put in the one type of fuel, for me, BP Ultimate.

If you are still having soot related issues, I would potentially just have a friendly, more indepth chat with your service manager. Prcurrie's catalytic converter lunched itself and didn't show up with an emmisions worning light on the dash and that is one of the critical emmisions components.....

I though he said that it was a Brake Vacuum Pump which was going to take ages to replace but didn't (in the 6R fault thread).
