EPA Got Me... Milltek Non Res Exhaust too loud. Help Needed

    Hey guys,

Received a nice little letter in the mail from an authorized officer that decided my vehicle was too loud and reported me to the EPA. I've got a few weeks to get things sorted.

As it stands. I'm at around 97dB and will pass at 90dB.

To be fair, the car is very loud under load (especially in sports mode), however cruising around town is more subtle to the point where you can't here much.

Current set up is a 2.75" full Milltek system with hi-flow cat and dump. No resonator
The car is a 2017 Polo GTI

I've been looking all over to source a stock exhaust system and finding it difficult to get my hands on one. Seems like wreckers don't want to hold them and throw them to scrap metal.

My question is: Would a previous model Polo GTI 6C (2014-ish) fit my car OR and AW GTI?

    Thanks in advance

Why not just get a cat fitted (big fine if you are found to not have a cat fitted) and have a Varex adjustable resonator or muffler added so you can make it quiet or loud at the press of a button. Even just adding a normal resonator (non adjustable) will knock a few DB's off. This combined with the cat (which will also knock a few DB's off) should get you to 90DB.

I think you will struggle to find a stock exhaust, plus then you have to pay the labour to remove current exhaust, fit stock exhaust, pass EPA test, then presumably remove stock exhaust and re-fit loud exhaust. It will be cheaper and much less of a stuff around to just have your current exhaust made legal.

    Thanks for the reply Lucas.

I've got a Milltek high flow cat fitted as part of the system.

If you can point me in the right direction or a link to this product that would be great. I haven't been able to find anything of your description for this car. All Milltek or Akrapovic systems don't really offer that (unless im missing something)

Alternative is i get my exhaust shop to make me the centre peice with a hotdog resonator in the middle and this should avoid any cutting/welding of my Miltek system.

Sorry I thought you said it was catless.

So if you look at this link it shows the Milltek exhaust with the resonated section. If you get in touch with Harding Performance they might have a resonated section they could sell you. It looks like a decent sized resonator so that would deepen the tone, reduce the harshness of the sound, and quieten it down.

Here is a link to the Varex mufflers, although it appears they only do larger mufflers with this technology, not resonators. So this option is probably not suitable for you: Exhausts Mufflers Varex Mufflers

The other option, like you said is to have an exhaust shop make up a new pipe with a resonator fitted that you can swap in and out at your leisure. The Vibrant resonators seem to get used quite a bit with good feedback, although the exhaust shop will likely have something in stock: Vibrant Performance 17950 Large Diameter Bottle Style Resonator, 3" inlet/outlet x 18" long
