If people are wondering why it's set to on as default, it's because the system is directly related to the car's greenhouse rating (and fuel use/emissions). Pretty sure it's mandatory to have it on as default if the car is fitted with it.

You are right alexaescht... The start/stop automatic doesn't just start/stop the engine, it is also responsible for charging and controlling the battery...
There is an option to build a micro-controller that automatically controls the button (like a memory function of last setting):

I haven't tried it myself, but sounds very plausible.

I disabled mine using VagCom the first week I owned the car. If I forgot to disable it on each trip, when I get home and leave the car to open the garage door it would stop and require a complete restart with the key. I can see they need to include this feature to meet economy standards in Europe but it's of no benefit to me in a small NZ town.
It's the worst feeling too, waiting to make a right turn in the middle of the intersection and having the engine stop!

Could you please list the procedure to disable stop/start in VagCom as it would be something that I would like to do when I get my car in Oct

All you have to do is lift off the brake far enough to restart the engine but still keep the car stopped Its not hard to do and is how I manage it all the time. It is possibly illegal to disable a safety part of the vehicle
