If people are wondering why it's set to on as default, it's because the system is directly related to the car's greenhouse rating (and fuel use/emissions). Pretty sure it's mandatory to have it on as default if the car is fitted with it.

You are right alexaescht... The start/stop automatic doesn't just start/stop the engine, it is also responsible for charging and controlling the battery...
There is an option to build a micro-controller that automatically controls the button (like a memory function of last setting):

I disabled mine using VagCom the first week I owned the car. If I forgot to disable it on each trip, when I get home and leave the car to open the garage door it would stop and require a complete restart with the key. I can see they need to include this feature to meet economy standards in Europe but it's of no benefit to me in a small NZ town.
It's the worst feeling too, waiting to make a right turn in the middle of the intersection and having the engine stop!
