The 7 speed DSG is noisy when changing gears (makes a metallic clicking type noise as the clutches / gears engage) so id say thats what you are hearing.

The noise is more obvious if you have your window down or sunroof open.

Precisely this is the big difference between the 7 speed "dry" box vs the 6 speed "wet" box.

don't stress out your gearbox isn't dying

Yep, as all above posts have said.

The 3rd gear is a doozy in the DQ200 dsg and will rattle around like a mofo, not detrimentally but it's just inherent of how the box is put together. You will generally hear it more prominently as you said when dropping down to second or from 4th into 3rd. Also when in second and 3rd gear is pre selected it will rattle. Must be just something to do with the geometry of the selector fork and the syncomesh patterns.

thanks everyone for your replies, sorry it took so long for me to get back to this thread. I will take it to VW for them to check it out either way just incase its something more than the gearbox. Pretty sad cause the rattle is quite noticeable once the windows are down and radio is off. sigh. once again thanks everyone.

Hopefully it turns out to be nothing (inside your box or on paper). Don't let your mind play tricks on you mate and try to remain positive

I have exactly the same problem. I first noticed it going down hill and slowing for a speed hump near my home- as soon as the engine pulled back into 3rd it would make this loud rattle/grind from the left hand side of the car. Now it does it all the time depending on how quickly I come to a stop, so it's load dependent. VW refuse to do anything about it. They say it's not a problem and doesn't need fixing, according to some TPI system they have which absolves them of fixing anything under warranty. So i'm going to consumer affairs next, after 3 service checks, and a VGA complaint. I don't even think mechanics work there- I think it's a bunch of guys in overalls who plug the engine into a computer and wait for the computer to tell them what's wrong and what to do. I really doubt that anyone across the two service centres I have taken it to has even looked at any part of the engine.

Mine must be the only quiet DSG that has come from the factory.

I noticed my own "first rattle" last night - it seems to be coming from the engine bay, but only when the car is stationary. It seems to vary in volume too. Any ideas what might be causing it?
