I'd say its the DSG playing up seeming the problems occur during gear changes. Take it to your dealer, they should be able to diagnose and repair it for you.
Hey everyone,
Recently just started noticing when I go downhill slowly or when the gears down shifts a rattling sound appears on the left hand side. worse when it is at low revs and when dropping from 3rd gear to 2nd or just going low in gear 1. Also when going through speed humps it rattles as well... Sigh oil consumption problem and now this. Anyone with similar problems? you reckon it is either DSG or engine? Thanks mate

Although seeming you say it happens over speed bumps, maybe it's engine mounts or the dual-mass flywheel.
I'm no expert but just a thought.

Hopefully it might be as simple as tightening up the engine mounts
It's the sliding sleeves in the DSG combined with the synchronisers they use for the first 3 gears (3 fold syncromech). They are inherently noisy and considering I have pretty much got a new gear box installed and its still makes this noise, I would definitely say it's a characteristic of the gearbox. It tends to be slightly louder in the summer but I think this is due to the oil viscosity been thinner and thus moving around a bit more.
In all I wouldn't worry about it.
Also if you are wondering why I pretty much got a new gearbox it's because it was dropping the clutch every gear. The awesome guys over at Burwin VW put my car in for warrantee and replaced the mechatronics unit and the clutches. Right after I got it back it still had the problem and I took it back to get looked at. Cut a long story short they said the gearbox could now no longer be counted as a fault and said it could just be my driving style.
Needless to say after I did change my driving style it is working much MUCH better so i think there is more at play here when it comes to these gearboxes. Eg. software.
Is it a 7 speed DSG? If so, have you had the 37g7 (Gearbox/mechatronics software update) campaign done? If not, I'd probably look into that first as it usually solves alot of problems people have. Usually only takes about an hour too.
Actually the 37g7 update does nothing more than give people false hope. All the 37g7 update does is release the pressure on the solenoids in the mechatronics unit when the car is at rest so that they don't stick and prevent the car moving.
The "smoother" feeling gearbox is not a result of the new software but the process of putting the software on. The gearbox is wiped and has to relearn all the clutch points again and user style. Until it learns, it has a default program that it runs for about a week that feels pretty good and smooth but then the effects wear away...
im going in to VW on thursday to get my noise looked at, ive had it looked at 3 times previously at artarmon and was less than satisfied with what happened. My noise is a terrible rapid clacking when i take my foot off the accelerator at ~ 3000rpm and 2nd or 3rd gear
I believe it could be a faulty support bearing but who knows...
