Whenever i drive my friends DSG Golf GTI and any other DSG car and am at the traffic lights / railway crossing etc for a length of time - i pop it into "N". This relieves the gearbox and you dont have to push the brake pedal so hard to stay put.

I actually started doing that at one point but thought that wasn't the best idea, I have no idea why???

Well I've booked it in again to get checked out because coming down on the gears there is this rattling sound, it's ever so slight but I can hear it when I turn the radio down. Some times it more noticeable. I have no idea how this could relate to a popped tyre but the car just doesn't feel the best now.

On another note, anyone recommend good places in Sydney to get a service?

^ that noise you can hear is the clutches in the gearbox engaging and dis-engaging when shifting up or down through the gears. I noticed it last week when i drove the Fabia vRS (same engine and DSG box as the Polo GTi). the 7 speed DSG appears to be noisier than the 6 speed DSG - perhaps this is due to the dry clutch setup in the 7 speed?

As for servicing in Sydney, are you looking for an independant VW specialist or a VW dealership? I cant help you with a dealership, but for an independent VW specialist, have a look at RamSpeed, Exoticars, and BWA Auto. All 3x of these places have an excellent reputation in the Sydney area and can do everything from basic oil changes, to suspension, tuning, exhausts, turbocharging etc etc.

Cheers awesome. Yeah i figured it was the clutch but thing is Ive never heard it previously... I mean it can't just be that I'm more prone to it now that I got my car back from being repaired the first time round?

Would anyone rate these independent companies over a VW dealership? Also on another note you mention tunes? Would they be able to play around with the ECU and do a fine tune? I'm not looking for maximum performance I basically want a more refine tune of the stocked mapping? Therefor i get better throttle control, fuel comp steady transition etc Can this be done?

    Cheers

Or should people treat it like an auto and leave it in D for 99% of the time and leave manual for the 1% fang etc?

Exoticars are GIAC dealers, and i understand that GIAC have a tune for the Polo GTI - but this will be an off-the-shelf tune and not customised to your requests.

BWA do custom tuning as do RamSpeed. So they can take your wants and needs into consideration. Another option is BMR Autowerks who are Viezu dealers.

And yes, Exoticars, RamSpeed and BWA Auto are held in very high regard amongst the Sydney european car community. Seems you cant go wrong with either of them.

With your DSG clutch noises, seeing the clutches have been replaced i guess its possible that the new clutches are a little noisies than the original set. Perhaps the noise will settle over time as they wear in?

ok cool... I'll be going to one of those companies then. I gave Ramspeed a call couple of weeks ago he was a massive nice guy, gave me a call back and everything...

Thanks...might cancel my VW service and go to ramspeed

My clutches haven't been replaced all I got was the 37G7 campaign update...well at least that's what the guy told should solve the issue. As mentioned before leaving in manual and in gear 1 shouldn't be an issue at all. So when taking off I shouldn't have throttle problems.

That's another way at looking at it but it kinda defeats the point of having the dsg over a torque converter.

RE Rattle noise, that's far more likely to be the dsg mechatronics unit doing its thing. This is normal if that is indeed what it is. Mine had new clutches put in it just over a week ago and there was no clutch noises either before or after. The 37G7 campaign just reprimands the part of the software that tells the mechatronics unit where to seat the shift solenoids. You will know if the clutches are worn, they will shudder when you try to accelerate from low speed and the motor is producing a lot of torque.

This is all well and true but why wasn this happening previously and now I have just noticed it? I'll be honest it hasn't really caused any driving hick ups other then the false starts on take off. The noise was never there before, it may very well be the DSG just doing its thing but the noise it makes doesn't sound health IMO.

Fair enough, nobody can really tell you what it is over the internet though so the only way to find out is to take it to a Vw dealer.
