    Cylinder 1&4 Misfire

    Hey guys,
    Hoping for some guidance. 2012 Polo 77TSI DSG.

    Accelerating out of a corner at lunch today and the car shutters then loses all its power, pull up into a driveway and turn it off then back on and everything is back to normal. I had a bluetooth ODBII adapter so I read the codes and I had cylinder 1 & 4 misfire. Doing some looking around, it sounds like it could be the ignition coil.
    I rang VW and they told me a simple check would cost $176 to tell me what the problem was. What a joke.

    I've never had this before and I'm not sure what the best course of action is. Should I keep using the car as normal and see if it happens again or should I just replace the coil to be safe.

    If I was to replace the coil, where does everyone recommend buying from, the only place I've found is eBay and Ignition Coil - Audi A2 A3, Skoda Fabia Yeti, VW Beetle Caddy Golf Pol – Car Parts Australia.

    $176 isn't that much money so me personally would take it in.

    Well the $176 wasn't to fix the problem just to tell me what the problem is. Then however much to fix it on top.
    I would have thought probably another $200 for the coil and installation should be need to be done.

    Go to Prestige & performance at Coorparoo or Alba European.

    For $65 I'd replace the coil anyway. I'd also do the spark plugs at the same time.

    Thanks, I'll check them out to see what their prices are like. Possibly better quality ones too.
    I was starting to think the same. Cheaper for me to replace it all than even to diagnose the problem.

    Along with replacing the coil and plugs, should I be replacing the leads that go to the spark plug as well? I haven't been able to find out what they are called.

    The car has only done 40,000kms in just over 3 years.

    I took the car for a drive this morning and didn't notice and roughly idling or excess fuel useage, avg 6.7L, even with giving it a few extra revs than I normally would. I had heard that stress can induce the issue.

    $176 is probably the hourly rate, so essentially, they'll spend an hour at worst, diagnosing the issue for you.

    A lot can be done in that time. Run a scan, test the leads, coil, plugs, do a quick compression test...

    Better than throwing parts at it on a whim.

    I wondered along the same lines but I asked specifically if after the diagnosis would parts and labour then be charged on top of that and I was told it would. I was explained that that was a flat fee.

    Yep, minimum an hour's diagnostic time. It gives you and them something to start from.

    If you just left the car with them and said "call me when it's fixed", you'd be in quite a shock once you get the bill.

    Even still, I hate the idea that because of it being a once off, there is a good chance they will send it back with nothing wrong and tell me to keep an eye on it. Still costing me $176.

    Why I posted it here was to see if anyone else had dealt with this and how to go about it.

    A mate of mine has a 2012 77tsi Polo DSG. He averages <6L/100km. Drives it quite hard too. Maybe it's low because 50% of his driving is in the country on windy roads.

    I can't comment on the leads. I know he had a dud coil pack around 50k.
