Mine did a similar thing but the noise stayed. The code I got was fuel pressure regulator low pressure. They changed the fuel pump but the noise was still there around that area. They have had the car for 2 weeks and still haven't pulled of the rocker cover to check what it is.

Well drove home, absolutely no loss of power or any strange noises. Brakes felt normal too which is good, I feel a bit safer knowing everything is working.
I'll be calling vw to book it in for a fix sometime this week.

Is it worth removing my apr tune and cai seeing as its an unrelated problem?

Depending on the dealer you should be right with the CAI, but i would be removing the tune and having the factory binary reflashed ASAP. Problem is though mate, if the dealership isn't friendly and wants to screw you, they will instantly know it's your car if they look on teh forum. I can't imagine there are too many stealth grey gti's around with aristos....
