I'd bet your injectors are stuffed. Ours were replaced at 70,000 km under warranty (thank god) because the car wouldn't idle, ran rough, stalled and sounded similar to yours. The car is now at 115,000 km with no further issues since the injector replacement.

Book it in with your VW dealer.

Anything on here will just be a guess.

    thanks for that..

i'm thinking mine is going to be a combination of bad injectors, injector timing and injector pump.

Injector timing is totally electronic so I'd doubt that's the issue here. Pump should only go bad if petrol was run through instead of diesel.
Injectors can fail for many reasons, such as poor quality fuel (water in fuel, or other contaminants). Injectors these days also just don't last very long as they're run under incredibly high pressures.

Timing is electronic however if a sensor is playing up then it could throw injection off..

Just a question: what fuel station would you usually fill up at? We've had heaps of issues with Woolworths/Caltex and so have friends and family.

It might be dirty fuel but really, i wouldn't expect it to be this bad if it was the dirty fuel..
