    Catalytic Converter Light (Solid)

New problem today I had one of the LEDs at the back of my license plate lights go out. So I went to replace it and it blew a fuse (5Amp) drove around 2 3 different Super Cheaps so finally grab the last pack, inserted into my car and now the catalytic converter engine light is on solid. It says drive straight to a service technician in the manual but I can't and it's the weekend. Does anyone know what this means and if its actually dangerous? I didn't do anything other then drive (slowly) to 3 different stores within 20km radius.

I've had this light come on before but it only came on for about 2 secs and then disappeared again.

The engine light shows a fault , not necessarily with the pre or post O2 sensors ( cat failure etc). Could be a myriad of other sensors or circuits at fault in your car !
Get it scanned by a local on here with VAGCOM software or take it to a vw specialist

I have VAGCOM but don't know how to use it. Weird yes I know I thought I should buy them but really I haven't ever really used them?

    Is it easy?

Ok I did a auto detect on fault/code etc and it gave me a heap of junk none of which were catalytic converter related by the looks of things... But after clearing and restarting car the dash engine light went away... too easy.

I knew these cables would come in handy

This sounds like a recipe for disaster! Engine warning light comes on, but instead of fixing the underlying problem, you simply wipe the code?

Well, it's your car, I guess...

I suppose if there is a persistent problem, the light will come on again... at least I hope so, for your car's sake...

That's just the engine fault light - not necessarily the cat. I had that with mine and it was the Brake Vacuum pump that had died. I would get VW to look at it no questions asked.

Oh I am definietly getting them to look at it regardless. It was more that it happened Friday and I wasn't to sure if I should be driving around like that if there was a potential problem. All I did was blow a fuse because I changed the LEDs on the license plate while the car was on, not knowing that it would do anything. After I replaced the fuse that light came on I can't see how a catalyic converter can break while changing a fuse after a blown LED...lol

I read the fault codes and nothing was mentioned so I take this as a clear indication. Plus I never cleared the faults it did it automatically.

What was the exact code it read.

VCDS doesn't automatically clear anything, you have to click the button.

Clearing codes and seeing what comes back is the way to go in my opinion. You could spend a lot of time looking into faults that no longer exist.
