I guess they will be able to see. Lower octane fuel will ping (pre detonate) in these high compression engines. If they take the head off and see every piston with little pits, scorching and what not then they could accuse the fuel. If its only 1 piston then its something else like the injector injecting at the wrong time or something causing pre detonation

I would have thought though in this day and age that with all the anti knock sensors they could pretty much eliminate pre detonation by retarding the ignition to the point where the engine pretty much stops (or deactivate the faulty cylinder)

My car is on a novated lease with two fuel cards (BP & Shell), although I mainly only use BP. The statements will bear out the actual fuel used.

As it was, I had a couple of dockets in the car...

Lucky you have it on a novated lease... In my case, if I were asked to provide proof, it wouldn't be easy! I always have a couple of dockets, but that doesn't prove you consistently use the stuff.

It's good they accepted your couple of dockets. Nevertheless, this is a bit worrying.

But I agree, they should be able to tell WITHOUT your proof, as nomadx38 points out.

went to dealership to get some stuff out of the car, ended up speaking to mechanic who is looking after the car...
    definitely a whole new engine...
seemed to know his stuff, was extrememly frustrated at VW tech lack of responsiveness and difficulty in communicating the obvious.
anyway, loan Golf TSI (same engine) is nice to drive, except I have to pay for the fuel now...

    cheers

That's much better than just being rebuilt.
Hopefully the new engine works properly

Tigga1, sounds similar to what happened to our friend DETROITCANDY. I believe he copped similar symptoms as yourself, expect they managed to solve the issue before the engine caused too much damage.. or so they think.

got a call from VW assist on Tuesday last week to say the 'part' was being fitted, and that the car may have been ready by end of last week. Guess fitting 'the part' took a bit longer than expected...(-:
So I expect to pick it up sometime this week.

Is there anything I should be looking out for after the major heart surgery...?

    cheers

Yeah, stretched timing chain after less than 10,000kms from memory? On a MY13 no less too!

Rattle and new noises because that could lend to something being put back incorrectly but in all honesty, there shouldn't be any issues from the installation.

    Tigga1,
How is the new engine holding up? I am hoping for a new engine for my GTI... well at the moment, waiting for any form of communication.
