have only done 700km, seems fine, just like a bought one...(-:
taking it relatively easy, warming up before revving it too much, driving gently in S mode till temp over 50degrees. Most of my driving is to and from work, a 30km trip each way, and includes a range road for half the distance, nothing too steep.
    good luck with yours.
as an aside, the mechanic said he knew within an hour of looking at the car what the problem was, but VW was difficult and kept asking for more info, logs etc etc. Even wanted proof of fuel used...

This happened to me the other day. Engine (catalytic converter) light came on at around 28,000k. There were no noticeable symptoms. Smooth idle and seemed to be running just fine. Thinking back, I remember slightly accelerated fuel consumption a week or so before the light came on. None the less, had it towed to VW & was fixed under warranty the next day. Apparently, it was a valve stuck open in the exhaust system.

the mechanic said that he had previously repaired one engine with 4 new pistons, the second one they replaced the engine, and mine was also a replacement.

Cylinder N04 has died 4 times in my car, killing spark plugs and coil packs.

I will contact the service manager today to see what they are doing with my car.

    gavs, response via email today:

"...He does not remember speaking about Number 4 Piston. He said it follows almost exactly as the report says, They compression tested the vehicle found Number 2 Cylinder Extremely low in Compression. Sent the information on the Cylinder Compressions, a fuel sample and a set of Measured Values from VAS (Volkswagens Analysis Computer) to Volkswagen on a DISS report to which they replied Replace Engine. I asked him if he was able to tell me if the low compression was caused by a Cracked Piston, or Ring Failure to which he replied that they didn’t even need to remove the head before Volkswagen had given them the go ahead to replace the engine.

Hopefully this gives you the info you require or if there is anything further I have the full file on my desk at the moment.
