Would it benefit the vehicle to have a really good run at least once a service period.....IE: over 4 hours highway driving.....Would that lessen the build up of carbon deposits?
I see.
That said, although it's satisfying to have an engine with spotless internals, I'd also be fine as long as the carbon deposits doesn't significantly affect performance. If you're a competent home mechanic who's passionate about cars, then I can see why you'd physically clean it yourself, but maybe a bit much if you have to pay someone to do it for you.
It's when they start building up on certain areas (but not limited to) the intake valves, EGR, etc. which can really affect performance that I start to get concerned. Hopefully for the OP, it's the former and not the latter.

If the engine has a fundamental design flaw, then no amount of driving will really prevent it. It may perhaps reduce the rate of buildup, but ultimately, you'll need to dismantle the engine and clean it.
At the same time, not all engines are affected to the same degree. As the 1.2 TSI hasn't been around for that long, I don't know if it's particularly prone to fouling up its intake valves. Also, the OP mentioned buildup in relation to the intake manifold, not the intake valves themselves (though feel free to correct).
For example, in this article (Direct Injection Fouls Some Early Adopters), some engines from other manufacturers have managed to avoid such buildup.
Would you guys recommend Seafoam to sort out the carbon build up?
Stage 2+ Intercooler Carbon Intake Downpipe Swaybar DV+ Remsa.
I use BG equipment and really like the results.
Does petrol and diesel, cleans EGR in the diesels and their chemicals continue to clean even after combustion. Expensive but worth every cent.

Yes it is. It’s a perfect addition to my Interject injector cleaning machine. I got it just a week ago after researching the market for a while. The results are really good. I still have to make the adaptor for it to be able to use it properly on the VW TDI's due to the clip on the T/Body. The diesel system has electronic box with the injector that is pulsed - there are 2 settings. The atomization and consistency (coverage/sprad) of the chemical is vital, that's why you don't get the same results from the spray cans. My son's in law RS Octavia TSI is close to 30,000km and I will make sure that I have a lot of time for the service to take some pictures of the engine internals, just wish that Snap-on bore scope camera (it takes video too) was higher resolution, ah well, maybe it's the time to upgrade it as well.![]()

just got a call from my VAG dealer and apparently the car has carbon deposits in the injectors ($220 to flush) and throttle body ($120)
does this sound right for a car that has just ticked over 5400km or can it wait until the annual service in october, by which time i'd be lucky to have done 6000km?

Sounds like a money grab.
I'd ask him how he ascertained that carbon was an issue. Ask in writing and ask that his reply be in the same format. The only way of inspecting these items would be by removing spark plugs & intake pipes & visually inspecting using a borescope.
After receiving their reply, I would then contact VWAU & ask them to pay for the repair.
Truly, find a new service centre. You are dealing with crooks.
