Cam Chain replacement???

Hi folks,

My 1.2 Tsi just had its 5 year service with 67,000Kms.

The VW mechanic noticed that the Cam chain rattled on startup and i noticed this change a couple of months ago.

Apparently the tensioner is at full adjustment and the chain has slack as it has stretched and prematurely failed.

I've done a little research and popular opinion would suggest an inherent fault in design as the culprit, regardless i need to fix the issue.

VW have quoted an entire cam chain kit consisting of a cam chain, tensioner, oil pump and quite a few other parts.

Total Parts kit $575
Labour (8 hours) $1100

Total $1675

Have any of you had this issue? Is the entire kit really necessary? Why did i buy a VW?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes you need the full kit.

Timing chain problems aren't exclusive to VWs. Almost all manufacturers have at least one model that suffers from chain stretch.
So don't feel too bad about the brand, you could have coped it driving a Holden.

You can get quotes from several shops and see who will give you the best deal. As far as dealers go, that price is reasonable IMO.

Thanks for the reply. I thought as much but i'm happy it's confirmed. I receive a great discount through supercheap auto, ill try and access parts through them if possible and will shop around for a quote on labour.

All good, you should be able to save a fair bit by shopping around.
But it's a big job so make sure you trust whoever is doing it to be experienced enough!

... Just so you know there is absolutely no guarantee that it wont come back again. I am onto my 2nd chain now and it needs replacement AGAIN. VW are sticking their heads in the sand at the moment. I'm actually going to just abandon VW and get my local specialist to change it with a kit that uses parts from FEBI or something.... i have no faith in the VW part.

Febi will be the same unfortunately.
Those engines tend to need this done every 50-100k.
By all means try other branded parts, but yeh from experience it'll just come back regardless.

The kit will probably be an INA kit, which is re-branded as VW anyway.

In doing so, you may not be guarenteed to get the revised tensioner, etc.
