I've seen in more than one motoring publication a simple side comment that the Polo GTI has a speaker somewhere in the firewall that "enhances" the engine noise inside the cabin. Apparently it's also in the Golf GTI & R. Is this all true?
Is it a simple duct to allow engine bay noise enter the cabin? Or is it actually an electronic speaker that increases volume? Or even worse, does it "modify" the sound to make the 1.4 TSI more rortier than it actually is?

The cicular ribbed bit is what controls the flow/level of the sound transmision into the cabin, the yellow plug over to the left plugs into the electronic control for it.
