Blowing smoke out the back at 9000k

    Hi fellas
I 've noticed, particualry at night, that when I am in traffic and put my foot down the rear is obscured by a bellowing cloud of smoke (for want of a better term) coming, presumably, from my exhaust. is this just part of the high oil use I experience (1 L every 2000km or so) , or something different?

It is a little disconcerting. Might be time to trade for another vehicle I think. Besides I'm missing the torque of a diesel in Syney's traffic...

    Thanks
    Andrew

I assume you have a GTI? what year?

Depends really, these engines run quite rich on take off so always expect a cloud of smoke on a hard take off. Remember oil burns white - greyish blue, and petrol burns black so if its looking like a diesel then its probably just petrol...

    Pretty normal mate

They run rich - if you give it a squirt - expect some black smoke clouds here and there

Especially if in D as the car won't always drop down a gear when it should, it will ride the torque curve to the point of falling off it.

What's embarrassing about a car that puts out a little black smoke and then flys to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds and does 7L per 100...haha I think it's worth it!

To each their own mate. Frankly while I like it - I'm abit over the torque steer, the endless wheel spin and the need to spin up the rev range to get it going with the noise that goes with it (I curse the day I chopped out the middle muffler...). I think I'd like less of a pocket rocket and more of a torquey crusier. Then again I am 48. I think at my age you are allowed a torquey crusier.

Never noticed any kind of smoke on my GTI, even under deep accelerations...
I also had a couple of time my wife following me on another car and called her to ask for any smoke, trying with deep gas at low and high revs: not a bit of smoke...

Mine is 0.5 liter in 10.000Kms, I fear that 1.5 liters in 1.000Kms could be the real cause of the smoke...

I feel sorry for those who have problems with this creepy engine and I'm not at all sure mine will be fine in the next kms, but there are no excuses or false illusions: rich mixture, break-in period...
This could be for a normal engine, this is not a normal engine, this is a engine fragile like porcelain...

Mine is definitely fuel related, I know that for a fact After a few good busts though after a week sitting at 5% throttle on a freeway most of the time, the smoke settles down

I get that too in my 2005 T5 PDTDI.
At night and against the headlights behind you it's when you will notice it the most even if you wouldn't have a problems with the oil usage, most likely it's that oil in the exhaust fumes that you see.
